Entrevista a Nate Garrett, vocalista, guitarrista y bajista de Spirit Adrift: ‘Nuestra música sigue siendo una salida y un vehículo para destruir todos los desafíos y la oposición en nuestras vidas’

Buenos días, es un placer para mí hacer esta entrevista con una de las bandas americanas de rock más prometedoras de los últimos años.

La inesperada crisis biológica mundial nos está sacudiendo con fuerza. ¿Cómo lo afrontas a nivel personal y cómo lo afrontaís como banda? ¿Has tenido que cambiar muchos planes?

A nivel personal, trato de no permitir que las circunstancias externas afecten mi paz interior y mi determinación. Lo mismo se aplica a la forma en que dirijo la banda. Tuvimos que cancelar y posponer años de gira, pero es lo que es. Como ser humano, debes ser capaz de sortearlo y descubrir nuevas formas de tener éxito. Me he asegurado de ser implacable para mantener el impulso. En cuanto a las ventas de álbumes y marzo, este ha sido el año más exitoso que hemos tenido, a pesar de que no pudimos hacer giras. No puedo esperar a ver qué sucede una vez que empezamos a tocar en directo de nuevo.

En caso de que algún lector de nuestra revista aún no conozca Spirit Adrift, ¿puedes describir con tus palabras quien sois y cómo suena la banda?

Spirit Adrift comenzó como un proyecto en solitario, luego armé una banda para tocar en vivo. Parece que todos mis años de obsesión musical y experiencias personales exorcizadas a través de la música metal cobran sentido en esta banda.

Antes que nada quiero felicitarte por Enlightened in Eternity, un álbum fabuloso. Como banda, ¿cómo definirías este nuevo álbum?

Lo mejor que hemos hecho hasta ahora.

Ahora que está listo para ser publicado, ¿estás orgulloso del resultado final?

Absolutamente. Definitivamente es mi álbum favorito que he hecho y Marcus siente lo mismo. Me encanta y estoy orgulloso de ello.

La banda se creó en 2015 y ya ha publicado cuatro álbumes sólidos. Enlightened in Eternity es el sucesor perfecto de Divided by Darkness . Tu cuarto álbum os permite evolucionar y madurar como banda. Especialmente después de las buenas críticas recibidas por su último álbum. ¿Ha sido difícil intentar igualar o superar el nivel de Divided by Darkness ?

Estoy obsesionado con mejorar cada día de mi vida. Mejorando como persona, músico, esposo, sobreviviente, todo. Una vez que empiezo el proceso de un nuevo álbum, nunca he dudado de que será mejor que el anterior. Sin duda alguna.

¿Qué influencias han marcado vuestras vidas y estos inicios de la carrera de la banda?

Las primeras influencias musicales en nuestras vidas son Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Priest, Maiden y todas las bandas clásicas de metal. También música country clásica, música psicodélica, música electrónica y cualquier cosa que sea REAL y HONESTA. Otras influencias incluyen décadas de trauma, sufrimiento, abuso y adicción, guerra psíquica y salir victorioso de todas esas cosas. Esta música sigue siendo una salida y un vehículo para destruir todos los desafíos y la oposición en nuestras vidas.

Los artworks de todos los álbumes son excelentes. ¿Cómo surgieron y qué artista se esconde detrás de estas obras?

Gracias. Todas las portadas de álbumes han sido conceptos míos, pero obviamente los artistas se toman algunas libertades creativas. Soy un artista de mierda, pero tengo una idea muy clara de lo que quiero que represente el aspecto visual de la banda. Estoy agradecido de haber podido trabajar con algunos de los mejores artistas de álbumes de todos los tiempos.

Divided by Darkness contiene algunos de los mejores momentos de la banda. Habeís tenido suficiente tiempo para prepararlo y pulirlo. ¿Cómo funciona la fase de creación / composición en una banda como la tuya? ¿Cómo combinas tu vida personal con el trabajo en la banda?

Escribo y demuestro todas las canciones por mi cuenta, luego se las llevo a Marcus. Mejoramos las canciones del nuevo álbum durante aproximadamente 6 a 8 meses. Mi vida personal es inseparable de Spirit Adrift. Son uno y lo mismo.

Realmente disfruto con la pista «Ride into the Light». Para mí, es uno de los mejores éxitos de su carrera. ¿Qué nos puedes contar de esta canción?

¡Gracias! Esa canción también es especial para mí, estoy muy orgulloso de ella. Esa es la primera canción que escribí para el nuevo álbum y estableció los temas y la vibra de todo el álbum. Quería hacer un abridor de álbum de METAL épico, clásico y sin tonterías como «Thunderstruck», «Overkill» o «Electric Eye». No hay duda de que estás a punto de emprender un viaje que es jodidamente metálico.

El tercer-cuarto álbum suele ser un punto de inflexión en la carrera de una banda. Es en este punto cuando se reparten las cartas sobre la mesa. ¿Cómo afrontas este importante momento? ¿Estás convencido de que el camino recorrido es el ideal?

El único objetivo que siempre he tenido es hacer las mejores canciones que pueda hacer, eso es todo. Sé que he hecho eso con este álbum y todos los álbumes anteriores. Cada vez que grabamos una canción, sé que le he puesto el 100% de esfuerzo y sufrimiento. Eso es todo lo que importa. Cualquier éxito externo es irrelevante en el panorama general. Lo que importa es la creación de arte puro y honesto.

Century Media es el nuevo sello de la banda, ¿qué beneficios tienes con ellos? ¿Te dan total libertad para crear y establecer tiempos de entrega?

Este álbum fue totalmente escrito incluso antes de que empezáramos a hablar con Century Media. No escucharon ninguna de las canciones hasta que entregamos el álbum terminado. Así que sí, esa es toda la libertad que podríamos pedir. Soy muy práctico y creo que Century Media se da cuenta de eso. Ofrecen todo el apoyo que necesitamos, pero me permiten la libertad de hacer las cosas a mi manera. Eso es todo lo que podría pedir.

Me gusta pensar que nuestro hábitat y nuestro territorio nos marcan como personas y como artistas. Nuestro trabajo tiende a tener el aroma de tu tierra. ¿Cómo ha influido Arizona en tu música?

No soy de Arizona, aunque viví allí durante 9 años. Soy del sur. Nací en Florida, crecí en Oklahoma y viví en Arkansas por un tiempo. Mira cuántas bandas increíbles vinieron de Florida. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet, Tom Petty, Morbid Angel, Death, Obituary… la lista sigue y sigue. Arkansas también fue importante para mí con Rwake, Deadbird y Pallbearer, entre muchas otras grandes bandas. Al crecer en el sur, escuché rock sureño y música country clásica todo el tiempo. Es una gran parte de la cultura. La música es un gran problema en el sur. Durante mucho tiempo, es lo único que la gente pobre del sur tenía en sus vidas que les traía alegría. Entonces es sagrado para mí. La música es sagrada.

Estar en una banda y hacer tantas giras no es solo subir al escenario y tocar una hora y media con tus compañeros y «bien hecho, adiós». Al final, tus compañeros son como tu familia, o tu pareja, compartes escenario, viajes, vivencias, emociones … ¿Cuál es el mejor recuerdo de estos años «en familia»?

La última vez que Spirit Adrift realizó una gira por Europa, pude renunciar a muchas de mis funciones en gestión de viajes, reservar hoteles, conducir, hacer marchas y ese tipo de cosas. Así que pude disfrutar verdaderamente de la experiencia. Toda esa gira es un largo y grato recuerdo. Incluso en el “peor” día de gira, volamos un neumático en la Autobahn… pero fuimos a un pequeño pueblo en Alemania y caminamos, era hermoso. Terminó siendo un gran día libre en el bosque. Así que toda esa gira es mi mejor recuerdo de la gira.

Al contrario, las complicaciones siempre aparecen en estas relaciones personales, en los tours … ¿alguna vez has tenido esa sensación de mandar toda la mierda, de pensar que lo que haces es inútil? Y si es así, ¿cuándo?

Todos los días cuestiono la validez de todo esto, especialmente este año. Pero de nuevo, todo vuelve para crear música pura y honesta. Eso es lo único que importa. Todo lo demás es una mierda. Me siento así sobre la vida en general. La vida es un 99% de tonterías, y tienes que dedicar tu vida al 1% que es puro y real.

Vuestra gira nos llevará a una fecha increíble con Corrosion of Conformity, esta gira se ha visto afectada por el maldito Covid-19. Imagino que habrás tenido unos meses difíciles en la oficina … Después de posponerlo en mayo de 2020 y reacondicionarlo en 2021, ¿crees que te podemos ver en primavera en Europa?

Ciertamente lo espero. Nos encantaría hacer realidad esa gira, así que tendremos que esperar y ver.

¿Qué nos traerá el futuro de Spirit Adrift?

Intento no vivir demasiado en el pasado o en el futuro. Mi única promesa es que continuaré haciendo la mejor música que sea capaz de hacer, mientras pueda.

Soñadores o realistas, esa es la elección de cada persona. ¿Qué sueños realistas tenéis como banda?

Escribe música clásica que resista el paso del tiempo. Me encantaría hacer una gira con Maiden, Priest y Metallica … y ese sueño se vuelve más realista con cada día que pasa.

Y para cerrar, me gustaría que eligieras una canción de tu catálogo, la que consideres más representativa para enamorarte de un oyente que no te conoce. ¿Eres capaz? Y si lo logras, ¿puedes explicar por qué este?

Hablamos de «Ride Into The Light» antes, que probablemente sea un buen punto de partida para las personas que aman el metal. No es representativa de todo nuestro catálogo, pero ninguna canción lo es … tenemos demasiada variedad. Pero me cuesta imaginarme una situación en la que un fanático del metal no entendería esa canción.

Good morning, it’s a pleasure for me to do this interview with one of the most promising bands of American rock in recent years.

The unexpected global biological crisis is shaking us hard. How do you face it on a personal level and how do you face it as a band? Have you had to change many plans?

On a personal level, I try not to allow external circumstances to affect my inner peace and determination. Same thing applies to the way I run the band. We had to cancel and postpone years worth of touring, but it is what it is. As a human being, you have to be able to pivot and figure out new ways to succeed. I’ve made sure to remain relentless in keeping the momentum going. As far as album and march sales, this has been the most successful year we’ve had, despite not being able to tour. I can’t wait to see what happens once we start playing shows again.

In case any reader of our magazine doesn’t know Spirit Adrift yet, can you describe with your words who you are and what you sounds like?

Spirit Adrift started as a solo project, then I put together a live band. It sounds like all my years of musical obsession and personal experiences exorcised through metal music.

First of all I want to congratulate you on Enlightened in Eternity, a fabulous album. As a band, how would you define this new album?

The best thing we’ve ever done, by far. 

Now that it’s ready to be published, are you proud of the end result?

Absolutely. It’s definitely my favorite album I’ve ever made, and Marcus feels the same way. I love it and am proud of it.

The band was created in 2015 and have already published four strong albums. Enlightened in Eternity is the perfect successor of Divided by Darkness . Your fourth album allows you to evolve and mature as a band. Especially after the good reviews received for your latest album. Has it been difficult trying to match or exceed the level of «Divided by Darkness «?

I am obsessed with improving every single day of my life. Improving as a person, musician, husband, survivor, everything. Once I begin the process of a new album, I have never doubted that it will be better than the previous album. No doubt whatsoever.

What influences have marked your lives and these early career of the band?

Early musical influences in our lives are Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Priest, Maiden, and all the classic metal bands. Also classic country music, psychedelic music, electronic music, and anything that is REAL and HONEST. Other influences include decades of trauma, suffering, abuse and addiction, psychic warfare, and emerging victorious over all those things. This music continues to be an outlet and a vehicle for destroying all challenges and opposition in our lives.

The artworks of all albums are superb. How did they come up and what artist is hiding behind these works?

Thank you. All the album covers have been my concepts, but obviously the artists take some creative liberties. I’m a shitty artist, but I have a very clear idea of what I want the visual aspect of the band to represent. I’m grateful to have been able to work with some of the best album artists of all time.

Divided by Darkness  contains some of the best band moments. You have had enough time to prepare and polish it. How does the creation / composition phase work in a band like yours? How do you combine your personal life with working in the band?

I write and demo all the songs on my own, then bring them to Marcus. We refined the songs on the new album for about 6 – 8 months. My personal life is inseparable from Spirit Adrift. They are one and the same.

I really enjoy with “Ride into the Light” track. For me it’s one the best hit of your career. What can you tell us about this song?

Thank you! That song is special to me as well, I’m very proud of it. That’s the first song I wrote for the new album and it set the themes and vibe of the entire album. I wanted to make an epic, classic, no-bullshit METAL album opener like «Thunderstruck», «Overkill» or «Electric Eye». There’s no mistaking you are about to be on a journey that’s metal as fuck.

The third – fourth album is usually a turning point in a band’s career. It is at this point that the cards are dealt on the table. How do you face this important moment? Are you convinced that the path taken is the ideal one?

The only goal I ever have is to make the best songs I can possibly make, that’s it. I know I’ve done that with this album, and every album before it. Every time we record a song, I know that I have put 100% effort and suffering into it. That’s all that matters. Any external success is irrelevant in the big picture. It’s the creation of pure, honest art that matters.

Century Media it’s band new label, what benefits do you have with them? Do they give you complete freedom to create and set delivery times?

This album was totally written and demoed before we even started talking with Century Media. They didn’t hear any of the songs until we delivered the finished album. So yeah, that’s as much freedom as we could possibly ask for. I’m extremely hands-on, and I think Century Media realizes that. They offer all the support we need, but allow me the freedom to do things my way. That’s all I could ever ask for.

I like to think that our habitat and our territory mark us as people and as artists. Our work tends to have the scent of your land. How has Arizona, influenced your music?

I’m not from Arizona, although I lived there for 9 years. I’m from the south. I was born in Florida, grew up in Oklahoma, and lived in Arkansas for a while. Look how many amazing bands came from Florida. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet, Tom Petty, Morbid Angel, Death, Obituary…the list goes on and on. Arkansas was important to me as well with Rwake, Deadbird, and Pallbearer, among many other great bands. Growing up in the south, I heard southern rock and classic country music all the time. It’s a huge part of the culture. Music is a big deal in the south. For a long time, it’s the only thing poor folks in the south had in their lives that brought them any joy. So it’s sacred to me. Music is sacred.

Being in a band and touring so much is not just going on stage and playing an hour and a half with your teammates and «well done, goodbye». In the end, your colleagues are like your family, or your partner, you share the stage, travel, experiences, emotions … What is the best memory of these years «as a family»?

The last time Spirit Adrift toured Europe, I was able to relinquish a lot of my duties of tour managing, booking hotels, driving, doing march, and that sort of thing. So I was able to truly enjoy the experience. That whole tour is one long, fond memory. Even the “worst” day of tour, we blew a tire on the Autobahn… but we went to a small town in Germany and walked around, it was beautiful. Ended up being a great day off in the forest. So that whole tour is my fondest memory of tour.

On the contrary, complications always appear in these personal relationships, on tours … have you ever had that feeling of sending all the crap, of thinking that what you do is useless? And if so, when?

Every day I question the validity of this whole thing, especially this year. But again, it all goes back to creating pure, honest music. That’s the only thing that matters. Everything else is bullshit. I feel that way about life in general. Life is 99% bullshit, and you have to dedicate your life to the 1% that is pure and real.

Your tour will bring us on an amazing date with Corrosion of Conformity, this tour has been affected by the damn Covid-19. I imagine you have had a difficult months in the office…After postponing it in May 2020 and reconditioning it in 2021, do you think we can see you in spring in Europe?

I certainly hope so. We would love to make that tour happen, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

What will the future of Spirit Adrift bring us?

I try not to dwell in the past or in the future too much. My only promise is that I will continue to make the best music I am capable of making, for as long as I am able.

Dreamers or realistic, that is the choice of each person. What realistic dreams do you have as a band?

Write classic music that stands the test of time. I’d love to tour with Maiden, Priest, and/or Metallica… and that dream becomes more realistic with each passing day.

And to close, I would like you to choose a song from your catalog, the one you consider most representative to fall in love with a listener who does not know you. Are you capable? And if you succeed, can you explain why this one?

We talked about «Ride Into The Light» earlier, that’s probably a good starting point for people who love metal. It’s not representative of our entire catalog, but no single song is… we have too much variety. But I have a hard time imaging a situation where a metal fan wouldn’t understand that song.
