SofN: Vuestra música huele a gasolina y a asfalto, a billar, a humo, a cerveza y a sudor.

No te engañes a ti mismo.

The Smiths, The Beatles, Willie Nelson.

Vitoria Gasteiz, Madrid y Barcelona.

¡Abrazos!

¡Gracias! Nos morimos de ganas ¡Hazte vegano! ¡Mantente positivo!

SofN: Hi, how are you?

Great. Couldn’t be any better to be honest.

SofN: I saw you in Girona, in 2018, together with Marky Ramone; I was very lucky of being able to take some pictures that are still in my mind. Also, Fynn went down to the pit and shacked my hand and probably saw my face in astonishment after your gig. Long story short: it’s an honor for me that you guys take the time to answer my questions.

Of course! We feel so blessed when people like you support this band!

SofN: You started from scratch literally, with your healthy intentions and without any help, all alone. Was it easy?

No not at all. We had to learn a lot of things the hard way. To be honest though, we got so much support from our family. Which is awesome but it doesn’t help you much if you’re trying to work in the music industry. Its a nice thing to know that you won’t fall deep if everything goes to hell. Especially with us. We always go full on or nothing. We truly believe in what we do and we work 24/7 on this band. Out of pain comes a lot of power.

SofN: Your music smells of gasoline and asphalt, billiards, smoke, beer and sweat. It smells way farther than the “Germany” we all know. Where do your influences come from?

Hahaha! I think I know what you mean. Having said that, we don’t feel local to anywhere but planet earth, the universe or call it what you want. We’re all one. We truly believe that and traveling as much as we do, we see that everyday, everywhere we go. We get inspired by so many things. It’s mostly feelings that we wanna express. Visuals, smells, vibes… we always talk about visuals before we start writing or recording a song. It just makes the whole process so much cooler when everyone is on the same page and try to translate a look, feeling or vibe into a song with instruments as our tools.

SofN: Does not your hard rock & blues accept a bass? There was one at the beginning. Does it slow you guys down or do you think it is not necessary?

We don’t think that anybody misses the bass when they listen to our songs or see us live. If anything there is way too much bass when philipp hits those huge drums the way does it. We don’t say that we hate the bass but so far we didn’t need one.

SofN: Who participates in the composition of your songs?

It starts with me having an idea that I usually record on my iPhone. I send it to Philipp and we start talking about it and I tell him where I wanna go with the song. Then we talk to my dad, Claus Grabke and usually we start recording the next moment. We write our songs in the recording process. It’s almost like a hip hop production where we work on every detail, step by step. Often we improvise too which is kinda cool when we both express something we talked about a minute ago with our instruments.

SofN: Why recording in the garage, because of the budget or by essence?

We love the vibe and the sound in there. For The Hands of Time (2019) we learned to use the studio a lot as well which was a lot of fun. It almost became like a new instrument that we could use. The mix of the garage and a professional studio go so well together on this album and we love going this direction.

SofN: Philipp’s style is “peculiar” and wild. Does he make his own accessories for percussion?

Sometimes he does, yes. The first percussions that we used were built for us by native american tribes. Super cool shit that inspired us to try to built percussions our self. Other then that I use a lot of percussions by the company Meinl. They really seem to know whats good. The rest is just anger management I guess. Hahaha…

SofN: The tours and concerts do not seem an obligation for you, but a pleasure. Is this right? What do you prefer, a big show or a small venue where the audience can almost touch the drum-set?

Touring can be the best thing in the world but it can also be very exhausting. Especially when you live an unhealthy lifestyle. We try to keep a daily routine on our tour and eat a whole foods plant based diet. We pretty much don’t drink any alcohol on tour and don’t do any drugs. We worked our asses off for over decade to do this, to see the world, to express and perform our art. People paid an entrance fee to see a rock ‘n’ roll show so they better get one. Nobody needs a drugged out and drunk piece of shit on stage. Also we remember looking up to people when we were these little skate punks in the skate park and looked up to so many cool skaters that lived a healthy and cool lifestyle that still do what they love to do where others went a weird directions and started doing drugs, eating a lot of meat and just lose themselves. We don’t wanna be that kind of a band. We want kids to look at us and say, hey, I can have way more fun and actually get way more shit done if I live a clean lifestyle.

To your question about small or big venues. We honestly don’t care. 110% or nothing. Give us no stage in a fucking clothing store and we will try to destroy the place. Been there done that to be honest.

SofN: Are you aware that the force and energy that you release in your live shows reaches the audience totally. And I want to emphasize the word ‘totally’? It’s not easy. Not everyone gets it. Do you agree? What do you think about that?

I think that something cool needs to be hated by a certain kind of person. We don’t write music that we want everyone and their mother to like. We make music that we like and everyone is welcome to join in on the fun but we don’t force anyone to do anything. We do feel that there is a connection live, very deeply and we often carrie these moments with us even after the show. Theres a lot of moments and connections we will never ever forget and we feel so grateful for that because that’s what life and living with each other is all about.

SofN: What can you tell us about your new álbum, The Hands of Time (2019), before I can listen to it for the very first time?

It is the most honest and coolest thing we’ve ever created. We really learned a lot about song writing over the years and it felt like we could finally release all this knowledge and inspiration on this album. It also never felt easier to write an album although being completely honest can be very hard sometimes but it felt so relieving and good to just speak, sing or play the truth. Don’t fake yourself around it. Stop bullshitting and Just get to the core. We also have our first guest appearance by nobody else but Chrissie Hynde herself from our most favorite band The Pretenders. We feel so blessed to have her on this album. We can still remember when we listened to pretenders all day long when we lived on our buddy’s roof top in a tent in Santa Monica. To then play a show with her in St. Tropez of all places on a Harley Davidson event right by the beach was even cooler. We got super close that day and shared our contacts at the end of the night. Couple of weeks later when we wrote “You Can’t Let Go”, we shot her a text if she would like to sing on a song with us and two minutes later we get a text saying “I’m in”! So fucking cool. We also used new instruments like a piano, mandolin and a harp that was played by our buddy Malcolm. Just all in all this is the coolest shit we’ve ever done!

SofN: Imagine for a moment hat you could organize your dream tour. With what other 3 bands would you like to go on tour?

The Smiths, The Beatles, Willie Nelson.

SofN: Finally, as a fan of yours, what does “The Rabbit and the Wolf” have that others do not?

The question is what it does not have! It doesn’t have all this other bullshit that other artists or producers love to put in there productions. Less is more. It’s drums, guitar and vocals. No cymbals, no overdubs, no bullshit.

SofN: Next tour? Where will we meet again?

We will be on our headlining European tour called The Hands of Time Tour 2019 after we come back from our Canadian tour with Monster Truck and it starts in our most favorite territory, Spain. We love it! Vitoria Gasteiz, Madrid and Barcelona. We figured, hey, why not start with a bang!

SofN: It has been an enormous pleasure and an honor, I hope to see you soon from the pit! Hugs!

Thanks! Can’t wait! Go Vegan! Stay Positive!
