Entrevista a Thomas Winkler, vocalista de Gloryhammer: ‘Generamos bastante más dinero ahora que hacemos conciertos más grandes y es genial tener a mucha gente que viene a los shows y se divierte con ello’

Buenas Thomas, en primer lugar, gracias por dedicarnos tu tiempo respondiendo estas preguntas. Este año Gloryhammer celebra diez años como banda. ¿Cómo recuerdas esos primeros días? Puedes hacer un balance de vuestra trayectoria?

Bueno, para mí han pasado menos de diez años porque me uní a Gloryhammer en 2012, entonces 7 años, jajaja. El primer álbum se ambienta en la Escocia medieval y el segundo álbum pasa en el espacio. Al final, el espacio fue destruido por un mago malvado. En el tercer álbum, el mago se va a otra dimensión y Angus Mc Fife lo sigue como se explica en las canciones del nuevo álbum.

Creo que Gloryhammer es una banda especial porque no creo que haya ninguna banda que abarque un concepto durante 21 álbumes, y nuestro principal reclamo de venta es una historia a través de 21 álbumes.

¿Tenéis material para 21 álbumes?

Sí, hasta el último detalle, jajaja…

Jajajaja, claro que sí…

Ahora estáis en una gira que visitará Madrid y Barcelona con Nekrogoblikon y Wind Rose. ¿Qué pueden esperar vuestros fans de estos conciertos y cómo será el setlist?

Bueno, podéis esperar ver a duendes explotando y un espectáculo de luces brutal. Y por lo que respecta a las canciones, habrá las mejores de los tres álbumes, por lo que será una gran fiesta. Creo que la gente estará lista para “hootear” en Barcelona.

¡Si, estoy seguro! Decías algo sobre tu entrada en la banda. Me gustaría preguntarte: ¿cómo te uniste? ¿Fue Christopher Bowes el que te pidió que entraras a Gloryhammer?

Revisó muchos videos de YouTube, porque intentaban encontrar un cantante hacía tiempo, y allí estaba yo, colgando una canción para el puesto de cantante de Dragonforce. Desafortunadamente llegué tarde, pero luego me preguntaron si quería unirme a Gloryhammer. No estaba interesado en una banda que justo empezaba, pero medio año después me volvieron a preguntar explicando que tenían las canciones escritas, la discográfica y los trajes y les dije que sí.

¿Y te explicó todo en ese momento? ¿Me refiero al estilo, la temática y la estética en los directos?

Sí, me contó un poco sobre el concepto y luego todos participamos en el producto final.

¿Te imaginaste que Gloryhammer se convertiría en una banda tan reconocida en tan pocos años? Habéis crecido mucho con solo tres álbumes…

Christopher Bowes pensó al principio que Gloryhammer solo sería una pequeña broma que duraría unos meses, pero la banda estaba creciendo cada vez más… realmente nadie esperaba eso, ¡es genial ver que la gente lo aprecia!

En 2013 publicasteis vuestro primer álbum, Tales from the Kingdom of Fife, que fue un éxito inmediato. ¿Esperabais tal recepción de los fans?

No sabíamos qué esperar, solo pensamos «estas canciones sobre duendes y unicornios molan mazo, ¡hagámoslo!». Lo lanzamos y en pocas semanas explotaron los me gusta de Facebook. Mi primer show fue en un pequeño pub, y el segundo fue en el escenario principal del festival MetalDays en Eslovaquia. Las cosas crecieron bastante…

Y ahora aquí estamos, inmersos en una gira con la mitad de los shows ya agotados, y solo llevamos 6 hasta ahora!

Las historias de vuestros álbumes suceden en un mundo maravilloso con batallas épicas, unicornios y mucho más, convirtiéndose en una especie de ópera espacial. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de recrear un mundo tan fantástico? ¿Christopher lo pensó antes de fundar la banda o trabajasteis juntos en ello?

Tenemos un grupo de Facebook y un dropbox con la banda, tenemos muchas ideas que compartimos y eventualmente escribimos las canciones en un software midi. Es un proceso bastante orgánico donde todos pueden compartir sus ideas. A lo largo de los tres álbumes, el concepto principal sigue siendo el mismo: el príncipe Angus McFife tratando de derrotar al mago malvado Zargothrax.

Con vuestro segundo álbum, Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards, lanzado en 2015, la banda ingresó a las listas oficiales de álbumes en varios países, seguido de giras con bandas como Hammerfall, Stratovarius y Blind Guardian. ¿Cambiaron vuestras vidas en ese período de tiempo? ¿De qué maneras?

Fue un sueño hecho realidad para mí ir de gira con Hammerfall y también fue un placer conocerlos en la vida real. Nuestras vidas no cambiaron mucho en ese período de tiempo, por eso…

¿Eligió cada uno de vosotros el traje que viste en el escenario, o incluso los hicisteis vosotros? ¿Cómo se diseñaron?

No los hicimos nosotros mismos jajaja… los buscamos durante mucho tiempo en Internet tratando de encontrar algo que se ajustara a nuestros personajes y al concepto, también asignando un color a cada uno. Pedimos los trajes y armaduras que más nos gustaron para cada uno de nosotros.

Teniendo en cuenta que vivís en lugares separados, ¿cómo es vuestro día a día y cómo lo hacéis para encontraros y trabajar en vuestra música, ensayar, etc.?

En realidad, nunca nos encontramos en la vida real porque nos odiamos… jajaja, es broma, pero en serio: nunca nos encontramos porque vivimos bastante separados y solo nos juntamos antes de giras, grabaciones… sobretodo practicamos y decidimos qué sigue y cómo debe sonar desde casa.

He oído sobre muchas bandas que no dejan de salir de gira, pero aún así no pueden llegar a fin de mes. ¿Es este el caso para Gloryhammer o ganáis suficiente para vivir? ¿Alguno de vosotros tiene otro trabajo?

Sí, ganamos lo suficiente. Yo también trabajo porque tengo otro oficio, pero para los demás, Gloryhammer es ahora su trabajo principal. Generamos bastante más dinero ahora que hacemos conciertos más grandes y es genial tener a mucha gente que viene a los shows y se divierte con ello, ¡no podría ser mejor!

¡Genial, que bien que podáis vivir de vuestra música! ¿Cuál es tu otro trabajo, si no te importa que lo pregunte?

Soy abogado en Suiza. Cuando estoy de gira siempre es difícil combinar porque obviamente la oficina está funcionando mientras estoy fuera, pero ahora no dejaría mi trabajo. Al menos hasta que tenga 40 años, entonces veremos, jajaja…

El año pasado llegó a nuestras manos Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex. Zargorthrax fue finalmente destruido, ¿no?

Si, exacto. Zargorthrax finalmente fue derrotado gracias a Mc Fife, antes de corromperse al final del álbum y suicidarse. ¿No es ese un gran final?

Lo es… Tenía una pregunta sobre quién escribe o piensa en la historia detrás de cada álbum, pero dijiste que lo trabajáis juntos, ¿verdad?

Si, exacto. Todos contribuimos con la idea principal y participamos en la historia.

¿Cuál es la canción más difícil de interpretar en directo?

Hmmmm, ¡las que nunca tocamos! Jajaja…

¿Y lo más difícil que tocáis en vivo?

Probablemente diría que es Gloryhammer, pero tal vez es solo porque es una de las primeras canciones y nunca se sabe qué esperar. Es difícil de decir.

¿Cómo cuidas tu voz en giras largas como esta?

Intento descansar lo máximo posible y beber agua o té en lugar de alcohol. Lamentablemente, soy el cantante, jajaja…

¿Tienes algún consejo o truco para cantantes de tu estilo?

Yo diría que descansen lo suficiente, eso es muy importante.

¿Tienes algún sueño especial como músico además de ganar muchos premios Grammy o encabezar todos los grandes festivales?

¡Probablemente matar tantos duendes como sea posible en el escenario! Jajaja…

Jajaja, ¿entonces cuando Nekrogoblikon esté en el escenario, tal vez te subas con el martillo y le des al duende?

¡Por supuesto, le añadiría al espectáculo!

Si vuestra discográfica os diera un cheque en blanco a cambio de que os cambiéis a un estilo mucho más comercial… ¿Qué harías? ¿Crees que podrías tener un precio?

¡Lo haría gratis, dependiendo del estilo que sea! Me gustan diferentes tipos de música, por lo que no es necesariamente malo cambiar el estilo. También es bueno cambiar un poco para evitar aburrir.

Claro. ¿Planeáis evolucionar en el estilo en los próximos lanzamientos o irán en la misma línea?

Bueno, todos tenemos influencias de otros estilos. El primer álbum se parecía más al power metal clásico, el segundo era un poco más moderno y mostraba otras influencias… Depende de qué canción sea… cada una tiene diferentes enfoques.

Eso es todo más o menos, antes de dejarte tengo una prueba para medir tu nivel de trve. Son tres preguntas rápidas:
¿Led Zeppelin o Deep Purple?

Para mí Deep Purple.

Vale, Iron Maiden o Judas Priest?

Hmmm, esa es difícil … creo que será Megadeth.

Hello Thomas, first of all, thanks for spending some time answering these questions for us. This year you celebrate ten years as a band. How do you remember those first days and can you make a balance of your trajectory?

Well, for me its been less than ten years because I joined Gloryhammer in 2012, so 7 years, hahaha. The first album was set in medieval Scotland and the second album was set in space. Afterwards, the space got destroyed by an evil wizard. In the third album the evil wizard goes to another dimension and Angus Mc Fife follows him as explained in the songs in the new album.

I think Gloryhammer is a special band because I don’t think there’s any band doing concept spans during 21 albums, and our main selling point is a story across 21 albums.

Do you have material for 21 albums?

Yes, we have every detail, hahaha…

Hahahah, okay…

Your are now on a tour that will visit Madrid and Barcelona with Nekrogoblikon and Wind Rose. What can your fans expect from these shows and what will the setlist look like?

Well, they can expect exploding goblins and a freaking lightshow. And songwise, there will be the best songs from all the three albums so it will be quite a party. I guess people will be ready to hoot at Barcelona.

Yeah, I’m sure! You were saying something about joining the band. I would like to ask you: how did you join? Was it Christopher Bowes the one who asked you to enter Gloryhammer?

He went through a lot of youtube videos, because they were trying to find a singer for quite a while, and then there I was, uploading a song for the Dragonforce singer audition. Unfortunately I was a bit too late, but then they asked if I wanted to join Gloryhammer. I wasn’t interested in a new band, but half a year later they asked again explaining that they had the songs written, the label and dressup and I said yes.

And did he explain everything to you at that time? I mean the genre, the themes and the aesthetic for the shows?

Yeah, he told me a little bit about the concept and then we all participated in the final product.

Did you imagine that Gloryhammer would become such a recognized band in so few years? You’ve become quite big with only three albums…

Christopher Bowes thought at first that Gloryhammer would only be a little joke for a few months, but it turned out that this band was growing more and more… nobody really expected that, it’s nice to see that people appreciate it!

In 2013 you published your first album, Tales from the Kingdom of Fife, which was an inmediate success. Did you expect such reception from the fans?

We didn’t know what to expect, just thought “these are cool songs about goblins and unicorns, let’s do it!”. We released it and in few weeks the facebook likes exploded. My first show was on a small pub, and then the second show was on the main stage of the MetalDays festival in Slovakia. Things grew quite a bit…
And now here we are, playing a tour with half of the shows sold out already, and we’ve only played 6 shows as of now.

The stories of your albums happen in a wonderful world with epic battles, unicorns and much more stuff, becoming some sort of a space opera. How did the idea of recreating such a fantasy world come about? Did Christopher think about it before founding the band or did you work on it toghether?

We have a facebook group and a dropbox with the band, then we have a lot of ideas that we share and eventually write the songs in a midi software. It’s a quite organic process where everyone gets to share their ideas. Throughout the three albums the main concept remains the same, it’s always been prince Angus McFife trying to defeat the evil wizard Zargothrax.

With your second album, Space 1992: Rise of the Chaos Wizards, released in 2015, the band entered the official album charts in several countries, followed by tours with bands such as Hammerfall, Stratovarius and Blind Guardian. Did your lifes change in that period of time? In what ways?

It was quite a dream come true for myself to get to tour with Hammerfall and it was nice to meet them in real life too. Our lives didn’t really change in that period of time though.

Did each of you choose the costumes you wear on stage or even make them yourselves? How were they designed?

We didn’t make them ourselves hahaha… we searched for them for a long time in the internet trying to find something that fit our characters and the concept, also assigning a color to each character. We ordered the costumes and armor that we liked the best for each one of us.

Considering that you live in different places, how is your day to day life and how do you manage to meet and to work on your music, rehearse, etc?

We actually never meet in real life ‘cause we hate each other… hahaha that’s a joke but seriously: we never meet because we live pretty far apart and only get together before tours, recordings… mostly we practice and figure out what’s next and how it should sound like from home.

I’ve heard of a lot of bands that don’t stop touring but still they can’t make ends meet. Is this the case for Gloryhammer or do you make a living wage? Do any of you have day jobs?

Yeah, we do. I’m working too because I have another job but for the other guys Gloryhammer is their main job now. We generate quite a bit more money as we play bigger shows now and it’s nice to have a lot of people coming to the shows and having fun with them, it couldn’t be any better!

Cool, it’s nice that you can pay your bills with your music! Which is your day job, if you don’t mind me asking?

I’m a lawyer in Switzerland. When I’m on tour it’s always a bit hard to fit both because obviously the office is still running while I’m away but I wouldn’t stop my work right now. At least until I’m 40, then we’ll see, hahaha…

Last year you got to our hands Legends from Beyond the Galactic Terrorvortex. Zargorthrax was finally destroyed, wasn’t he?

Yeah, exactly. Zargorthrax was finally defeated thanks to Mc Fife, before he becomes evil at the end of the album and kills himself. Isn’t that a great ending?

It sure is… I had a question about who writes or thinks of the story behind each album, but you said that you work on it toghether, right?

Yeah, exactly. Everyone is contributing with the main idea behind and participates on the story.

Which is the most challenging song to perform?

Hmmmm, those that we never play! Hahaha…

And the most difficult that you actually play live?

I’d probably say it’s Gloryhammer, but maybe it’s just because it’s one of the first songs and we never know what to expect. I’ts hard to tell.

How do you take care of your voice in long tours like this one?

I try to rest as much as possible and drink water or tea instead of alcohol. Unfortunately, I am the singer, hahaha…

Do you have any tips or tricks for singers in your style?

I would say rest enough, that’s very important.

Do you have any special dreams as a musician besides winning a lot of grammys or headlining all the big festivals?

I’d just probably love to kill as many goblins as possible on stage! Hahaha…

Hahaha, so maybe when Nekrogoblikon is on stage you’ll get up there with the hammer and smash the goblin?

Absolutely, it would add to the show!

If your label would give you a blank check in exchange for you to move to a much more commercial style… What would you do? Do you feel you could have a price?

I’d do it for free, depending on the style it is! I like different kinds of music, so it’s not necessarily a bad thing to change the style. It’s a good thing to change a bit to avoid getting boring.

Sure. Do you plan to evolve in your style in the next releases or will it be on the same lines?

Well, we all have influences of other styles. The first album was more like classic power metal, the second one was a bit more modern and showed other influences… It depends on which song it is… each one has different aproaches to it.

For me it’s Deep Purple.
