Confesaré una cosa, aquí y ahora. Cuando se me propuso la idea de poder entrevista a Little Steven, me entró una extraña sensación por el cuerpo. Por un lado, pensé que… joder, menuda oportunidad poder conversar unos minutos (10 minutos de reloj clavados) con una leyenda viva de la música. Pero, por otro lado, mi vergüenza y timidez hizo que afloraran en mí 1.001 estúpidos temores. Pero… what the fuck. ¡Al lío!
Ese crack llamado Ricard Altadill, artífice de toda esta movida, se citó conmigo el pasado domingo, 16 de junio –un día antes de su espectacular concierto en Barcelona– justo delante del Hard Rock Cafe de la Ciudad Condal. Tras un pequeño error de coordinación en el que un quiosco mal situado intervino (me defenderé aduciendo que el mensaje de WhatsApp no era del todo claro), llegué tres minutos tarde a la cita y, raudos y veloces, dirigimos nuestros pasos hacia en interior del restaurante, donde nos recibieron Maribel Martínez, coordinadora de Hard Rock Cafe, e Irene Martínez, de Piazza Comunicación, quienes se mostraron en todo momento colaboradoras y atentas al detalle para que toda saliera sobre ruedas. Nuestro más sentido agradecimiento para ellas dos y para todo el equipo de Hard Rock Cafe Barcelona.
Tras una breve espera en el callejón adyacente al restaurante, Little Steven apareció en escena, y tras pararse a firmar algunos autógrafos y posar ante el photocall, se dirigió hacia el interior del Hard Rock Cafe para dar comienzo a su show, que consistía en pinchar algún que otro tema veraniego, al más puro estilo Little Steven’s Underground Garage, mientras dedicaba unos minutos -entre canción y canción- a todos los medios (no pocos) allí congregados.
Tras una breve espera, y tras ingerir una pinta, llegó nuestro turno, y nos dirigimos a través de los entresijos del local hacia una zona privada en la que se había habilitado un pequeño set de entrevistas, una zona esta que parecía haberse habilitado solo para mí, pues de las cuatro o cinco piezas de memorabilia que colgaban de sus paredes, dos de ellas pertenecían a 311…

En esta gira de Summer of Sorcery 2019 con los Disciples of Soul, estás revisando tu… ¿octavo álbum?
Bueno, eso depende. ¿Cuentas el álbum en vivo?
No…
OK, entonces es el… debería ser el séptimo, ¿verdad? A ver… cinco en la década de los 80, Soulfire sería el sexto y este es el séptimo, y el álbum en vivo está en el medio.
Mañana actúas de nuevo aquí. ¿Qué diferencias encontraremos en relación a tus últimas actuaciones de 2017 en el Cruïlla y la de Razzmatazz del año pasado, ambas en Barcelona?
Un espectáculo completamente diferente. Aquellos fueron shows relacionados con Soulfire, que giraban alrededor del álbum Soulfire, y giraban entorno a la historia de toda mi vida… y la historia del rock and roll, a la vez… ¡que es casi lo mismo! Jajajaja Soy un poco más joven que el rock and roll, pero no mucho… jajaja. Entonces eso fue… ya sabes, como dije, una historia, la historia de mi vida. Pero todo esto de ahora es ficción, no cosas biográficas, no más política. Esto es… Summer of Sorcery son 12 películas diferentes, interpretadas por diferentes personajes cada una y les damos vida en el show, ¿sabes? Así que creo que de las 22 o 23 canciones que solíamos tocar el año pasado, creo que voy a mantener solo tres o cuatro canciones. Así que se trata de un espectáculo completamente nuevo.
¿Tienes buenos recuerdos de tus últimos conciertos en Barcelona?
¡Fantásticos, sí! Siempre. Es una de mis ciudades favoritas. Soy un gran aficionado de Gaudí.
¿Qué tiene de especial nuestra ciudad? A Bruce (Springsteen) le gusta mucho y también a Eddie Vedder, quien tocará aquí dentro de unos días. Él también es un gran fan. Entonces, ¿tú también formas parte del club de fans?

Has compartido recuerdos y escenarios con innumerables músicos destacados. ¿Tienes a alguno todavía pendiente?
No lo sé, de verdad. Sabes… la mayoría de los artistas con los que quería colaborar, ya lo hice en el pasado, y ya no quedan muchos. Desearía haber hecho más con Ben E. King… con David Rothon… ya sabes… así que, en parte, me arrepiento. Pero ahora estoy más o menos concentrado en mí mismo, lo que es realmente raro… jajajaja. Normalmente soy la última persona por la que me intereso, y este último álbum es una sorpresa para mí… una gran sorpresa.
¿Cuál es tu primer recuerdo con una guitarra?
Creo que con mi abuelo. Encontramos una vieja guitarra acústica del padre de mi padre y el padre de mi madre, que aún estaba vivo, me enseñó una canción. Y fue cuando tenía… 12 años, más o menos.
En el programa de radio Little Steven’s Underground Garage, ¿cuántas veces recuerdas a «Moondog» Alan Freed?
Le doy las gracias al final del programa, cada programa… durante 17 años, sí. Era extremadamente importante tocando música negra para niños blancos. Hablo sobre ello en el show de Soulfire.
En Lilyhammer (2011), además de actuar, también fuiste el co-escritor y responsable, en parte, de su música…
Sí, co-produje, co-escribí, y también dirigí el episodio final. Hice toda la supervisión musical, que son las canciones, e hice toda la partitura después de la primera temporada. La primera temporada hice algunas cosas y no tuve mucho tiempo, pero para la segunda y tercera temporadas hice toda la música.

Sólo hay espacio para uno más, y el barco se está hundiendo. Solo puedes salvar a uno de ellos…
Jajajaja… «the Fixer» fue mucho más divertido de interpretar, ¿sabes? Porque Silvio, tenía que preocuparse por Tony Soprano quien era un poco impredecible, ya sabes… era el jefe. Así que Frankie «the Fixer» estaba más por la labor de divertirse.
¿Hay alguna escena en la que tú James Gandolfini hayáis disfrutado especialmente?
Sí… él es un muy buen amigo y le extraño todos los días. Es la mejor escuela de actuación a la que puedes ir. Como he dicho en muchas ocasiones, es un gran actor y, ya sabes, los disfruté todos.
¿Todavía conservas alguna relación especial con alguno de los actores de The Sopranos?
No, en realidad no. Veo a Vinnie Pastore un poco porque él tiene una compañía de teatro junto con mi esposa. A Tony Sirico tal vez, de vez en cuando. A David Chase, lo veo bastante a menudo, el creador del show. Tiene un nueva serie que está filmando ahora mismo, The Many Saints of Newark, la precuela de The Sopranos, 30 años antes. Así que será divertida de ver.
¿Algún otro proyecto / serie que puedas tener en mente o esta faceta de tu carrera ya está cerrada?
No, me gustaría hacer más, me gusta mucho. Tengo cinco guiones que he escrito. Tengo muchas ideas. Solo necesito encontrar más tiempo. Necesito al menos seis meses y no puedo encontrarlo ahora mismo. Esta gira acabará en noviembre, pero quiero dejar tiempo por si Bruce quiere hacer un nuevo disco. Si él quiere, entonces habrá un disco de the E Street Band y habrá dos años de gira. In this Summer of Sorcery Tour 2019 with the Disciples of Soul, you’re reviewing your… is it your eight album?
Well, it depends. If you count the live one. Did you count that one…?
Nope…
OK, then it’s the… it should be the seventh, right? We’ll see: five in the 80’s, Soulfire would the sixth and this one is the seventh, and the live album is there in between.
So you’re playing here tomorrow. What differences will we find from your last performances in 2017 at Cruïlla and the last year at Razzmatazz, both in Barcelona?
A whole different show. That was a Soulfire show from the Soulfire album and it was a story of my whole life… and the history of rock and roll, together… which is almost the same thing! Hahahaha. I0m a little bit younger than rock and roll but not much… hahaha. So that was… you know, like I said, a story, my life story. But this is all fiction, no biographical stuff, no more political stuff. This is… Summer of Sorcery is 12 different movies, played but different characters each one and we bring them to life in the show, you know? So I think out of 22, 23 songs from last year, from Soulfire, I think I will keep three or four songs. So it’s almost entirely a brand new show.
Do you have good memories from your last gigs in Barcelona?
Fantastic, yes! Always. It’s one of my favorite towns. I’m a big Gaudí freak.
What’s so special about our city? Bruce loves it so much and also Eddie Vedder, who’s playing solo in a few days, is a huge fan. So are you also part of the fan club?

I don’t know, really. You know… most of the ones I wanted to collaborate with I did it already in the past, and there’s not too many left. I wish I have done more with Ben E. King… I wish I had done more with David Rothon… you know… so I regret that. But, you know, I’m kind of focused on myself at the moment which is really rare… hahahaha. Im usually the last person I’m interested in, and this last album is a surprise to me… and big surprise.
What is the first memory of yours holding a guitar in your very own hands?
It should have been with my grandfather. We found an old acoustic guitar from my father’s father and my mother’s father, who was still alive, taught me this song. and it was when I was… 12 or so.
In the Little Steven’s Underground Garage radio show, how many times do you remember «Moondog» Alan Freed?
I just thank him at the end of the show, every show… for 17 years, yeah. he was extremely important playing black music for white kids. I talk about it in the Soulfire show.
In Lilyhammer (2011), besides acting, you were also the co-writer and responsable -in part- of its music…
Yes, I co-produced, I co-wrote it, I directed the final episode. I did all the music supervision, which is the songs, and I did all the score after the first season. The first season I did a few things, I did not have much time, but the second and third season I did all the music.

Are there any scenes that you and James Gandolfini especially enjoyed?
Yes… he is a really good friend and I miss him everyday. He’s the greatest acting school you can go to. As I’ve said many times, he’s a great actor and, you know, I enjoyed them all.
Do you still keep some special relationship with any of the cast of actors of The Sopranos?
No, not really. I see Vinnie Pastore a little bit because he has a theater company with my wife. Tony Sirico maybe once in awhile. David Chase, I see him quite often, the creator of the show. He has a new show he is shooting right now –The Many Saints of Newark-, the prequel to The Sopranos, 30 years earlier. So it’s going to be fun to see.
Any other projects / series that you may have in mind or this facet of your career is closed already?
No, I’d like to do more, I really like it. I have five scripts that I’ve written. I have lots of ideas. I only need to find more time. I need at least six months and I can’t find it right now. This tour goes to November, but I wanna leave time just in case Bruce wants to make a new record. If he wants to, then there will be an E Street Band record and there will be two years touring. So, where do you find six months for TV? I don’t know.
And the last one. What non-profit organization would you recommend to our readers?
Mine! Rock and Roll Forever Foundation. We are creating the TeachRock.org, the music history curriculum for the world for free. All the teacher in the world are using it. It’s a wonderful way of getting this young kid’s attention, so it’s important.
