Entrevista a Michael Ehré, batería de The Unity y Gamma Ray: ‘Gamma Ray no afecta a The Unity a día de hoy’

¡No, absolutamente no!

Children of the Night” me recuerda muchísimo a Judas Priest.

Might.

¡Realmente me entusiasman H.E.A.T!

Avantasia, Pretty Maids y Whitesnake … ¡qué cartelón! 😉

English

Well, it was a fantastic new to know that the Unity will come at the end of the summer in Ripollet. One of the biggest and eldest festivals in Spain. And it is always for free. Does it this concert will be your first festival as a headliner?

As far as I know we are not the headliner, I guess it´s H.E.A.T. But it´s the very first show for The unity in Spain and we´re really looking forward to meet our spanish friends and fans there.

I have read that The Unity has signed two more albums with SPV/Steamhammer. Do you feel comfortable in SPV, ¡they have got always great bands!

Absolutely! They did a great job and so we didn´t hesitate for a second to continue working with SPV.

Your last album Rise peaked the 69th in Germany. Something really great for a band who had issued only two albums. Did you expect something like that?

No, absolutely not! We were really overwhelmed and we hope that we can keep or better increase this level with our third album. We’ve been busy, played some tours and festivals and released two albums within one and a half year. It wasn´t easy but it was worth it!

After you’ve tested the songs live for a few months, what songs of this album do you think have the strongest chances of becoming classics in The Unity’s future career?

We’re existing since 2016, so it’s hard to talk about classics but in my opinion “No More Lies” and “Never Forget” could make it. Let’s see what the future brings.

You are working in a clip for the next single “Welcome home”. You are trying to collect live clips and photos from your fans all over the world. Have you finished the clip? Are you happy about the stuff that the people has sent to you?

We’re not finished with the clip but working on it at the moment. We received tons of material, this took a lot of time to sort out but it was really cool to see how many people sent us their stuff! I can’t wait to see the final clip!

In your last album Rise we can say that The Unity is closer to hard rock than power metal?

In my opinion The Unity is whether a power metal nor a hard rock band. We’re somewhere in between. When people ask me to name the style of our music I always classify it as a mixture between both worlds. We have different songwriters in the band and everyone is different. But the good thing is that in the end all the songs sound like The Unity.

Children of the Light” remembers me Judas Priest. Does is Judas Priest one of your biggest influences?

Not the biggest but definitely one influence. I’m a big Priest fan but I can tell you that “Children of the Light” was not written by me but Henjo, who’s also a Priest fan but even more a fan of bands like Deep Purple or Rainbow.

Time to talk about your singer Gianba Manenti. It is perfect for the band but… Where did you find him?

I met Gianba when I was on tour with ex Europe guitar player Kee Marcello back in 2009 in Italy. At that time I started to write songs for a band that later became Love.Might.Kill and I needed a singer. Gianba went on stage to join us and sang “Rock The Night” and I was blown away. Since then we´re working together and I´m so happy that I know him, not only because he is a fantastic singer and songwriter but also an awesome person and friend.

Last week I was in Rock Fest Barcelona attending at Gamma Ray’s show. There were Henjo and Michael playing there. I love Gamma Ray and it was a fantastic show, one of the best in the last 10 years (I have seen Gamma Ray live more than 20 times). I suppose that The Unity depends about Gamma Ray’s schedule. Isn’t it?

No, because in the last three years Kai Hansen was busy with Helloween. This year we’re playing six festival shows and after that Kai will focus on Helloween again, so Gamma Ray doesn’t affect The Unity at all at the moment.

In Ripollet you are going to play alongside bands like H.E.A.T. It is a fantastic line up, so probably will be there over 5,000 people. What is your opinion about HEAT and is going to be your biggest audience?

I really like H.E.A.T! I have some of their albums and I really like them a lot. So, it’s fantastic to play the same festival. Actually 5,000 is not the biggest audience we had so far. We played Metalfest and Masters of Rock in Czech Republic and there were even more people. But it’s true: we’re rarely playing in front of 5,000 or more people, so this I something really special for us and we hope that this marks the beginning of a big relationship to our Spanish fans.

Currently I’m working in a “Perfect songs” report. Could you tell me your opinion about these songs, please?

Final Countdown (Europe): A classic and one of the best hard rock songs ever written! I like the whole album.

Fairytale of New York (The Pogues): I’m sorry but I don’t know this song…

Black Rose (Thin Lizzy): I’ve never been a huge Thin Lizzy fan but not because I don´t like them but I never really listened to them. Of course I know some of their classic but to be honest I don´t know “Black Rose”…

If you could put up a tour with any four bands you wanted, being The Unity one of them, which ones would you choose and why?

Avantasia, Pretty Maids and Whitesnake… what a line up 😉

Finally… tell me from your standpoint which is the best song ever written and why?

Hard to say…when it comes to real metal I would say “The Hellion/Electric Eye” by Judas Priest. In my opinion this combination has everything a pure metal song needs!

Well, that’s all for now. Thank you very much again for your time and very good luck. See you in Ripollet at the end of the summer.

Thank you! See you in August!
