Entrevista a Michael «Olga» Algar, vocalista/guitarrista de The Toy Dolls: ‘Todas nuestras canciones son autobiográficas, también «Knickers off in Mykonos»’

¡Nunca he estado allí, afortunadamente! ¡zorra!

¡No puedo llegar a creer cuánto tiempo llevan a mi lado!

Hi Olga, last time I interviewed you was in 2011. In all these years I had the opportunity to attend twice at your shows, and, as always, both were fantastic and funny. This interview is in order to promote your upcoming concert in Barcelona next January.

HELLO! Well, thank you! And we cant wait for Barcelona, in fact all of Spain!

I have reviewed your last album and I think that it is perfect for the fan. As a fan, it is just what I expected: great songs, 100% Toy Dolls and your characteristic voice. It seems a synthesis about all your career and some songs reminded me albums like Absurd-Ditties (1993) or Castrated (1995) era. Do you agree?

Cheers for that, I do agree with it too, ha! I think «characteristic» is one way of describing my voice!  Its not how my next door neighbour describes it though!

A fantastic news is that you are now in a Spanish company: Maldito Records. Why a Spanish label?

I not sure how the Spanish label happened to be honest! But I am glad it did!  The guys at Maldito are great, and it really is good to have a release in Spain & Portugal.

Why did you dedicate a song for Richard Clayderman. Are you sure that the world needs to remember Clayderman?

Ha, good question, well, I had that song written for a few years now, though Richard may have sold 30 million albums and be the world’s most successful pianist , we just cant stand his face, that smile, arrghhhhh…

Lots of fun in “Señor from Benidorm”. I suppose you have been there… It is because you signed with a Spanish label or the song was written before?

Nah, this was written before the signing, I have never been there, fortunately! But an ex-girlfriend has, that’s who the song is about… bitch!

I love “Knickers off in Mykonos”, but… does it is something autobiographical?

Cheers, it’s the complete truth, as all the songs are, it is autobiographical, yes! It’s a lot easier to write about fact than fiction, the story is already written really!

I suppose you have tested the new songs in live. Probably people go mad in “El Cumbanchero”… Isn’t it?

Cheers, we are playing live 5 songs from the new album, and «El Cumbanchero» is one of them yes!  The crowd seem to really like it!  Probably because there’s no singing in it, hahaha!  It is really nice to play actually!

Instrumental song “Until next Time” is fantastic. Do you open or close your shows with this song?

Oh, really? Thank you! We are using the theme tune from our very first album for the opening and closing of our shows, as celebration to the 40 years together, but using «Until Next Time» is a good idea! Thank you!

It seems that Toy Dolls has a permanent line up, congratulations. Which is the secret to keep the line up on?

Thank you, finally! Tommy and Duncan are the best, great performers and great guys, I can’t believe how long they have stayed!  Not sure about there being any secret, I guess it just took a long time to find two crazy people!

A difference among Toy Dolls and most of the punk bands from your generation (and others) is that you have fantastic skills and that, technically, your songs are harder to play than most of the punk stuff. Not many punk bands have your solos… so, are the guitar solos a trademark or characteristic in Toy Dolls?

Ha, not sure about fantastic skills! But thank you anyway! It’s nice to have guitar solos which complement the melody of the song, however, not all of The Toy Dolls songs have or need solos, sometimes none is better to be honest! The rhythm guitar is more a Toy Dolls trademark!

One of the keys of your sound is the choruses. It sounds melodic but hooligan too. Did you want these choruses since you began with your first album?

Yes indeed, the in-tune hooligan chorus’s have been there since the start!  They are an integral part of The Toy Dolls I reckon, I can’t imagine The Toy Dolls like without them!

Many bands are now playing albums in his entirety… Not your case, but do you think it would be possible soon?

Yes, it is an idea we have been thinking about, it may happen! Would take a bit of practice, some songs we haven’t played for 37 years!

Every time I attend at a Toy Dolls show in Barcelona is a sold out. About 1000 people in the venue. Not many punk bands can achieve something like that. Does Barcelona have something special for you or the sold out is something common in Europe?

Fortunately lots of places throughout the world are Sold Out!  Not everywhere, but lots! We are flattered and really can’t believe it to be honest.

Barcelona has always been fantastic too, great people, and Razzmatazz is one of the best venues in the world.

A live trick that I love is when your guitar and bass make a 360º circle while you are playing. Another trademark for the band, maybe as important as the sun glasses?

Ha, a trademark yes, stolen from ZZ Top! Important but not quite as important as the sunglasses, they have been there since day one and will always stay!

I remember that in the 90’s somebody climbed at the scene and stole your glasses in Barcelona while you were playing! It is common that the fans disturb your live shows? What do you feel when these things happen?

Mmm, I cant remember that to be honest, but crazy things like this do happen, that’s a live show after all! No problem!

Time to talk about some songs that I specially love from your band. How does somebody can write something like “Florence is Deaf”? The first time I listened to I thought… Amazing! Do you think is one of the best songs you ever written, or it was just joking?

Thank you, again its just based on the truth, Florence was a deaf friend of my mothers, I couldn’t think of any lyrics actually, so Florence is about the lyric in the song!

It didn’t take much time to write the words for that one!

I have to write about the 40th Anniversary of The Clash’s London Calling issue. What is your opinion about this album and which is your favorite song from it?

Of course a CLASSIC. Favourite song from it…. Mmmmm… all great, probably the title track «London Calling»! However, Give ‘Em Enough Rope (1978) is my fave album!
