¿Estáis grabando cosas nuevas en vuestro estudio The Dungeon o todavía no habéis empezado?

Me encantó vuestro último álbum Underworld, especialmente dos canciones: «Without You» y «Nevermore».

En cuanto a mí, mi canción favorita es «In my Darkest Hour».

Me encanta Watchtower, especialmente Control and Resistance.

5. «Denied by the Cross» de Ross the Boss: El mejor Ross the Boss posible entregando auténtico true metal.

Y, finalmente.

Congratulations, it seems that you will be in the next edition in Rock Fest in 2021. It will be great to see you there but I’m not sure if it will be possible due to the Coronavirus crisis. How is the band is facing these hard times?

We had North and South American tours planned, as well as European festivals for 2020. All had to be postponed. The frustrating thing is that we are powerless to change anything. We are at the mercy of the venues, promoters and booking agents.

I have seen that bands like Great White are currently touring in the USA. Do you think it is a good idea?

Yes, I think it’s a great idea. Bands need to start touring and playing venues at full capacity, or many of us will just disappear. Woodstock happened in the middle of a pandemic. We can’t live our lives in fear of a virus with a 99% recovery rate.

I suppose that soon that we will have a new Symphony X album soon. Will it be closer in terms of sound to Underworld? Are you recording new stuff in The Dungeon or not yet?

We were all set to start writing, and then the Corona virus showed up and killed our plans. When the guys feel comfortable, we will start getting together and working on some ideas. I don’t know how the album will sound yet.

Since The Odyssey (2002) it is usual that Symphony X need to take a 4 or 5 year-long break between albums. Why do you need a gap of four or five years between albums? In your beginnings you just needed one or two.

In the beginnings of the band, we didn’t do any touring, so it was possible to release albums every two years. Once the touring started it would take much longer. Also, we needed more time to keep trying to make better albums than our last one.

I loved your last album Underworld, specially two songs: “Without You” and “Nevermore”. We can say that both are classics. Which were your favorite songs in Underworld?

Those are great choices for sure. As for me, my favorite song is “In my Darkest Hour”. It reminds me of classic heavy metal. I also love “Swansong”. It’s just a beautifully written ballad.

Michael LePond was hired in 1999 after Thomas Miller left the band. I suppose that to be hired by Symphony X was not an easy job. How was the process of being hired by the band?

A friend told Michael Romeo about me. I was given two auditions for the band. I was very intimidated. Although I never thought I would pass the audition, I practiced like a crazy person. It was a dream come true when I got the job.

Last year the band celebrated 25 years of career touring alongside Primal Fear and Firewind. It seems that Symphony X are really comfortable playing with power metal bands. Do you think Symphony X is more metal than progressive?

Yes, I do. Symphony X has prog, symphonic and classical elements, but we are most comfortable with playing power metal. In my opinion, prog bands have the best musicians, but the metal bands have better songs.

Something curious is that in the band there are three “Michaels”: LePond, Pinnella and Romeo. What if tomorrow Jason Rullo and Russell Allen leave the band? Will will look for two more Michaels?

Whenever someone calls out to Mike, all three of us turn around to answer (laughs). When we are all together, I am called by my last name, Pinnella is just called “P”, and Romeo is just called by his last name.

Your first solo album was issued in 2014 under the name of Mike Leond’s Silent Assassins. In that album you played guitar and bass guitar and had some special guests. Are you thinking about a new album with your Silent Assassins in these confined times?

I just released a new Silent Assassins album on June 26th. The title is called “Whore of Babylon,” released by Silver Lining Music. It’s a combination of every style of heavy metal you can think of. You can buy it everywhere.

In your album there was Allan Tecchio singing! I love Watchtower, specially Control and Resistance. Which is your opinion about that band and this singer?

Watchtower is a very impressive band that I highly respect. I’m not really a big prog fan, but I think they are one of the best. Alan Tecchio is perfect because he can sing with great power and melody. I am honored to call him a good friend.

I have studied a degree in history, and it is a pleasure to listen to a band who has influences from books like Milton’s Paradise Lost or Homer’s Odyssey. Which books do you think Symphony X could get inspiration from their upcoming albums?

We never know what concept we will use for an upcoming album. Many of the coolest ideas have been taken already, but we will research and eventually find something amazing to write about. We always do.

Russell Allen has been singing with Trans-Siberian Orchestra and he fits perfectly there. Do you think that Mike LePond could fit in TSO too?

Yes, I would love to work with TSO. It’s a beautiful production and I love playing Christmas songs.

Last time I saw you on stage was in Leyendas del Rock playing with Ross the Boss. Great show and great band. Do you love playing with a legend like him and to play all the classical Manowar stuff?

When I was in my college years, Manowar were always one of my favorite bands. Now 30 years later, I get to play those songs I love with Ross on the same stage. It’s another dream come true in my life.

In some interviews Ross has said that he was the main composer of all that stuff in Manowar. Do you think that Manowar after Ross the Boss was not as good as with him?

I love Manowar before and after Ross. In fact, my favorite album is Gods of War. Joey DeMaio was always my favorite bass player, and one of the best songwriters in heavy metal history.

In our website we have a Top 5 songs every Monday. It will be great to know your five favorite songs you play: Symphony X, Silent Assassins, Ross the Boss… and some words about each one:

1. «Tell Tale Heart» by Mike LePond’s Silent Assassins: A heavy metal movie about Poe’s classic story.
2. «Ides of March» by Mike LePond’s Silent Assassins: The life and death of Julius Caesar.
3. «In My Darkest Hour» by Symphony X: Symphony meets Judas Priest.
4. «Swansong» by Symphony X: Beautiful sweeping classical ballad that will make you cry.
5. «Denied by the Cross» by Ross the Boss: Ross at his best, delivering true metal.

And finally. I’m working in a special report about perfect songs. It will be great if you could tell me your opinion about these perfect songs:

“Shine on You Crazy Diamond” by Pink Floyd: Classic and progressive rock at its most creative point.
“In a Gadda-Da-Vida” by Iron Butterfly: This could be the very first heavy metal riff ever written.
“Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd: Some of the best guitar playing ever on a record.

Thank you Mike. Gràcies, Yadira.
