Muchas gracias. ¿En este momento justo? OK, te voy a explicar.

Y realmente no necesita mucho trabajo.

Exactamente Gotthard hizo muchas versiones.

¡Gotthard!

Ahhhh… no sabemos … (risas)

¿Cuándo empezaste a volar?

Gracias a ti.

Hello, Nic, from Barcelona, and thank you, I’m Jordi from Science of Noise magazine, let me tell you that it is a big pleasure for me to be able to speak with you. From my point of view Gotthard is one of the best hard rock bands ever. So… Tell me, what is doing Nic Maeder right now?

Thank you. Right now? Ok I’m going to explain you. I’m actually having a glass of wine with a friend of mine who is a winemaker here in Lugano, in the Italian side of Switzerland. As you may know, with Gotthard we make our own red wine. I was talking with him having a glass of wine. Because we just spend with the band a week rehearsing for the tour. And we finished rehearsing maybe… two hours ago. (laughs)

Lugano, what a beautiful place! So, the tour is going to kick off in April?

Yes, tour starts in Budapest on April the 13th.

Well, listening Number 13 album I think that is your best album in years. Probably my favorite with you as a singer. All the bands always say that their new album is the best. However, in this case, I think it is true. Is #13 your best album in Gotthard?

Like you said before, whenever we make an album we always think that it will be the best album so far. We get excited, and of course, we make the best album possible. As we spent three years doing de Defrosted tour, which meant that we missed one year of songwriting again, and we were very anxious and happy to come back and start the songwriting process again. We really wanted to do a good rock album because we’ve been playing in acoustic for three years, so we were ready. Let’s plug in the amps and make some noise! (laughs)

D-Frosted 2 was amazing. I really think that it was an excellent album.

Thank you. D-Frost was a funny one because we toured before the album came out. We were touring one year before, then, we recorded and issued the album. We were doing things backwards in a sense (laughs). It was an interesting thing. I believe it was a great album but, well, we got a lot of musicians on stage. In some concerts that we did we had 30 people on stage, between the string quartet, percussions, backing singers… It was a great experience, but we really felt that it was the time to go back to simple rock. Just plug in and make some noise!

30 people in scene is a lot of people…

Yes, believe me, it is quite difficult to organize, for rehearsing, for everything in general… Nevertheless, now it is time to rock. So, we are really looking forward to the new tour.

Your new single is “Missteria”, an excellent song, 100% Gotthard. Oriental approach for a new classic, and pretty girls in the videoclip. A new anthem for Gotthard has been born?

(Laughs) Oh… maybe, we never know these things. We wrote “Missteria” with Francis Rossi from Status Quo, and it was funny because the oriental side came much later on. It actually came when the song was completed and we were in the recording studio with the backing singers of the D-Frosted tour. I was doing backing vocals, choruses and the producer Paul Lani said to one of the girls, who is Egyptian: “hey, sing anything, improvise”, and she came up with these oriental lines… and it was really at the end, it wasn’t planned. It just happened this way. And we thought: “Woww, this is a different touch, gives a different feel, and we got these percussions on top as well, and it is something a bit different for Gotthard”.

Another song that I loved is “Everytime I Die”. Which songs from #13 do you think that could be future singles, maybe “Better than Love”?

Mmmm, actually the next single at this moment is “Bad News”. And then we don’t know, we got to see. “Everytime I Die” is good. We have just been spending the whole week playing the new songs in a rehearsal room with everybody, and we are testing to see which songs could be the best ones to play live, which ones feels the best, and I have to say that… it is funny that you say this because “Everytime I Die” is amazing. It is a really fun one to play and sounds great. It doesn’t really need a lot of work. We kind of plug in, I start the song and it’s there. Also, “Better than Love” is a very good one. Yes, it is interesting that you have said that…

Incredibly there is a cover in #13: “S.O.S.” from Abba. A really beautiful song, are you going to play it live?

I think that is very possible that we will. I think we even talked about it could be a single one day. We don’t know which song will be the new single. However, we thought about this one, and yes, it is an interesting one. The reason why we chose that song was because the Swiss television was doing a Christmas show with an Abba tribute, and they ask me to do it. I thought: “Abba… Mmmmm” (laughs) It is not really one of my favorite bands”. But I tried and I recorded a version of “S.O.S.” just on the camera and the voice. And I thought: ‘This could actually work’. So, I decided to do the TV show. We were about half way through the recording and songwriting process and I said to the guys: ‘Listen, I’m doing this song for the Swiss TV, an Abba’s song, what do you think?’. They heard the song and they loved it. In fact, Leo turned around and said: ‘We wanted to do this song with Steve many years ago. We never did it but we actually always wanted to do it once’. So, we decided: ‘Ok, let’s do it’. That’s how it happened.

Well, I remember that Gotthard have two more covers: “Hush” and “Come Together” from the Beatles, so it is nothing new for the band to play a cover song.

Exactly. Gotthard always did covers, I mean. I think up until Firebirth album have a cover in each.

In the front cover there are two bulls raging on. What would the band express with this front cover?

Well, actually there are no bulls. They are cows.

Oh, yes, cows! You are from Switzerland!

Yes (laughs). In the beginning, the album was going to be called Round 13and we were trying to find an image that would represent luck in a sense, like going back to the boxing ring again, going back again for another fight, another round. So, it was the Round 13, because it is our 13th studio album. This photograph was really powerful. So, we had this strong image and we changed the name. It wasn’t Round 13 anymore, just #13, but it still really fit the kind of the idea we had. We left it like this.

The first time I ever listened to Gotthard was in 1997 when Montserrat Caballé released their album Friends of life. A duets album with Freddie Mercury, Bruce Dickinson, Vangelis and… Gotthard! I fell in love with the ballad “One Life, One Soul”, what a beautiful song. What did you think when you realized that Gotthard worked with Montserrat Caballé?

Actually, it is funny that you said it because a few weeks ago I was doing some promotion with Leo in Berlin. We were in a German TV channel and they were actually making a documentary exactly about this collaboration and about Caballé‘s work. I think that it is amazing that Gotthard was able to do a duet with such an amazing singer. She was absolutely phenomenal. This is a once in a lifetime sort of thing. It is also mind-blowing because Leo spent a lot of time with her and he told me a lot of stories about how she was. What was really amazing is the fact that she could bring two different worlds together. Usually, in classical music, the very purest stay very close to their sphere and they don’t like to mix things up. She was not like that. I think she saw emotion in every type of music. It is amazing what she did and that she thought this way. She was fantastic.

I think that, probably, she was traveling through Central Europe and in the radio sounded “One Life, One Soul”, she listened to the song and was amazed by that beautiful song. And I’m sure she thought: “I want this song in my new album”.

Yeah, that is very possible.

What did you feel when in 2011 you were the chosen one to be the new Gotthard singer? To be the singer after Steve Lee’s death could be traumatic for the fans but I think that Gotthard’s fans are really happy with you, aren’t they?

Yeah, of course, those were difficult times for us, especially in the first years. We had to work really hard and everything was a very delicate… But we were very lucky because the most of the fans stayed with the band and really encouraged us. We talked with our fans in the beginning and so many people were really encouraging me. It was very difficult. Is not an easy thing to do but, in the end, the fans chose and they decided. I am very lucky. I think that Gotthard has been around for a very long time and always we have been the Gotthard family. This is the spirit.

I always thought that the relationship between band and fans is really beautiful.

Yes, here we go, we are very lucky to have these fans. There are all different, we have three generations of people who come to our concerts and it is really fantastic to see.

The last 11 Gotthard albums have reached number 1 in Switzerland. It is something incredible. I suppose number 13 is going to be another number 1 in Switzerland. Will it be?

Ahhhh, we don’t know… (laughs)

I bet it…

You never know. We heart to the best and of course but… AC/DC could put an album a week before us and we would not be number 1 (laughs). Anything can happen, it depends… I think is a lot of luck also that it is involved. It is awesome, 11 in a row. In the end it doesn’t matter so much. It is fantastic when it happens but if it doesn’t happen it is OK. That’s it.

I think the album is strong is 100% Gotthard… I’m sure it is going to be number 1 again, I’m sure.

Of course, we hope so.

Yesterday I took a look at your Facebook page and I saw you driving a plane. When did you start flying? Is it one of your hobbies?

Yes, I started flying, I got my l lessons four years ago and it took me two years to do it, so yes, I’ve been flying for four years, more or less. Well, when I was living in Lugano I was very close to the airport where I lived and I saw those little planes flying in front of my house, taking off… it was very close, and a lot of my friends were flying there for some reason that I don’t know why. I always thought that someday that was something that I loved to do. And my dad, actually, flew before I was born. He flew in little planes, so, as a kid, I loved planes and I was interested to learn everything about it. I started to taking lessons and it was crazy (laughs), it was like coming back to school for two years. A lot of exams, a lot of things. I was flying yesterday, a beautiful flight over the lake Como.

You are not the first heavy metal singer who fly… Bruce Dickinson for example…

Yes, but Bruce Dickinson is a real pilot (laughs), not like me. He is incredible. I’m just flying in the first level, really small one.

A highlight in Gotthard career was Lipservice. Is my favorite album, so far. But… Which is your favorite Gotthard album?

Mmmm… I would ask to agree. Probably I would say Lipservice if I look the before me era. And with me I would say probably (thinking)… Firebirth. And the new one.

Coreleoni is a new project that tries to remember the old Gotthard stuff but now, some Gotthard fans are discussing which band and singer is better. Does the band feel comfortable with Coreleoni project?

Oh, well, Leo is very happy doing this and he is fan of the early Gotthard stuff which, of course, most of the songs we don’t play it, and even with Steve, so Leo wanted to do a solo project with songs from that era. 10 years ago he wanted to do this solo project so it is cool and a nice project and he is enjoying it. And of course… if I spend all my time in the internet reading reviews… (laughs) you know, I don’t really do that. Whatever people like is fine.

Last time you played in Rock Fest Gotthard played “Hush”, and later, Deep Purple played “Hush” too. Two big bands and a fantastic song. Why “Hush” is more than a song? Do you think it is a perfect song?

I think it is interesting because it is a great song to get public participation. It is a really good one. Everybody loves to sing “Nanana nanana” (laughs) It is an easy one to get it. Always remain and it is a song that we always do. Always work really well and makes people happy. You have the audience singing. It is a good fan song. And yes, it is interesting to have the same song as Deep Purple…

I’m working on a project called: Perfect songs and I need your opinion about a perfect song called “The Final Countdown” from Europe.

Well, I met the guys and they are really nice. I think they were very lucky to had a hit like that, but honestly… is not my cup of tea. Personally, I’m not a fan of this song but the songwriting is brilliant (sings the riff and laughs). I wish I write something like this.

Which is your favorite song ever?

Oh, I will have to say “Hells Bells” from AC/DC

Good choice

Yes, this was the song I heard when I was a kid and I heard that song on the radio and that changed me forever. I wanted to be in a band and I loved hard rock music. That was I wanted to do.

AC/DC is an Australian band and I know that you have lived there before being Gotthard’s singer. So… You are from Australia or from Switzerland?

I was born in Switzerland, my family is from Switzerland and currently I’m living here, but when I was three years old I moved to Australia. Probably I spent more time of my life in Australia than Switzerland.
