La banda se llama “For All We Know” de Ruud Jolie.

English version:

SoN: Hi, first of all would like to thank you for your time at Science of Noise. It’s an honour to be able to interview a band that I’ve been following for so many years and that I discovered with your first album «Polars» which really impacted the scene and that opened many doors for you. The rest is already known history by many, full of good records and above all incredible songs. How are you, Bart?

I’m very well, thanks! Preparing for our last European tour, which is gonna be quite special.

SoN: You have visited our country on several occasions and I would like to know what you liked most about Spain and Barcelona in particular?

We’ve played in Spain quite a number of times, in big, sold out places and also small bars; it was always a lot of fun; spanish people are crazy! Those were surely a few of the most sweaty show we’ve ever done.

SoN: It can’t be easy to face a tour when you know it’s the last one. Have you had a hard time making this decision to stop being Textures?

Of course it’s not easy, but when you see it’s not gonna work as a group, then the best thing is just to stop, before frustrations might divide us as friends.

SoN: I hope that in the future you will come back together again so that we can enjoy your music on record and live but until that moment comes I suppose and I hope that several of you will be involved in some project or collaboration. Could you tell us a little about these musical projects?

Yes, some of us will continue with any musical project; smaller, short term projects or cool collaborations are in the pipeline. I’m personally open for any project, any style as well. I like to be busy with all kinds of genres in music. I myself have always fantasized about a solo album, maybe there is time for that now, haha. And also I will play some shows with a band from Holland, which asked me to join for their first live shows the band: “For All We Know”, by Ruud Jolie. It’s an awesome band, and we’ll do some shows in march, and from there look what will happen.

SoN: You were planning to do the «Phenotype» sequel, but we’ve realize we will not be having it and it’s a shame. What caused you to stop editing this album? I suppose you’d have almost everything composed and it must be difficult to dispose of so much material. How is this decision being addressed?

As I said, you can’t force people to plan recording sessions etc.. If it doesn’t work and people have a really hard time planning these kind of things, it’s better to respect that and look for a solution.. Unfortunately the only solution is to stop the band. It’s too much effort/stress to get this band going. Priorities have shifted within the band, and you can feel that in the workflow. A lot was written for Genotype, but still a lot of recordings had to be done. This would involve many recording weeks, which we can’t realise in this situation. It’s a huge setback, but it creates some mystery as well, haha. Who knows what the future might bring..

SoN: I see you only have dates in Europe for the farewell tour. Do you plan to visit any other continent before you end your career?

Actually, we have some shows in India planned: next week 2 shows, and our VERY FINAL show will be the 8th of December , in India. That will be a special show for sure. It’s cool we can finish this together as a group, in such an environment.

SoN: As you have announced there have been no bad vibes or arguments and I suppose that it is because of family, work and other more personal issues that you have decided not to continue but when you have a record label behind you, a good number of fans worldwide and above all what has been your modus vivendi for so many years what feelings come out in your heart and how do you deal with this situation?

Because all these fans we’ve come so far, and have done all these incredible shows all over the world. We can’t thank them enough, it means a lot to us.

SoN: It’s really great that you decided to bring Exivious, a band that I admire very much and that some time ago also stopped their activity. Whose idea was it to have them, I guess they didn’t hesitate to say yes, right?

Yes, it felt like a right thing to do; we knew they were also planning a final tour, so why not do it together? They’ve always been good friends of us, so it’s great we can do such a special tour together.

SoN: A curious fact which I do not know if you will be able to answer me, after gathering information about you all of a sudden I have found that you no longer appear in “Metal Archives” and in the past you had your profile with all the information available. I know that their criteria are quite strict but you guys have not stopped making metal and extreme metal with infinity of nuances and fusions in any record. What’s the reason for this?

Haha, I don’t know that site very well, but even after we stop, you would say we would fit perfect on that site; Things of the past you “archive”, right? I don’t think it’s a very relevant site, I must say..

SoN: The setlist that you are preparing is being carried out by means of a survey through Facebook where the fans get to say our preferences. It is a good initiative to satisfy our concerns and listen to our favourite songs. Whose idea was this? How much performance time will you offer us?

Yes, we took the survey seriously, as we take our fans seriously. We put up a setlist with all the favorite songs, we even had to practice some songs that we haven’t played in a while. This will be the longest setlist we ever played, so get yourselves ready 🙂

It will depend on each venue how long we can actually play, but we’re aiming for a 2 hour setlist aproximately.

SoN: Changing a singer is something that can be good or bad depending on the point of view from which it is approached. It’s not the same as replacing a guitar, a bass player, etc. Did it cost Daniel to adapt to the group and above all emulate Eric and his vocal register?

Daniel knew Textures before we asked him, and he was a fan of Eric‘s vocal skills for sure. Daniel has great live skills, the only thing he had to get used to, were the weird rhythms that we use. The cleans, screams and grunts he had in his skillset already, we just had to do some extra sessions for understanding the groove and rhtyhms etc.

SoN: Let’s go into your world a little bit. What concert do you remember most of your career?

Talking about Spain: our show in a sold out Madrid was really memorable: jampacked, and in the middle of the summer: I haven’t sweat that much in my whole life haha. From the first note it was a madness, great fun!

SoN: How many countries have you visited and which do you remember most fondly?

We’ve seen almost every country in the EU, next to that; all states in the USA, Mexico, Russia, Israel and India. India has become our second home: Almost every 2 years we went back for another show; playing a headline show for a few thousand people that know your music is amazing, especially because our album is not in the stores over there haha.

SoN: Do you have any contact with the former members of the band?

Yes, last weekend I had some drinks with our former bass player Dennis Aarts, my head still hurts from it.

SoN: And, which album is your favourite and which song would you choose if you could only stick to one?

“Silhouettes” is my favourite. Favourite song: “Swandive”; because it’s the very first song ever written by Textures, and still covers all elements that band represents.

SoN: Now that you are going to split up, would it be all right if a band paying tribute to Textures came up? In my eyes I find it very difficult to carry out your music in a reliable way since I consider you to be excellent musicians, but do you think this is a possibility? And since we are talking about this type of bands, what do you think of the boom they are having? Are there as many in your country as here?

I wish them good luck if they start a Textures cover band, haha. Yes, you see a lot of cover bands here, especially from old rock and prog bands. It’s great fun, but I would not attend such a concert myself.

SoN: The next question is for a section we are doing called «Food and Music», in which we want musicians to explain to us what kind of food they like best or what is their relationship with food. Do you like cooking? What kind of food do you eat on tour? What do you choose to be brought in the backstage?

I hate cooking. If I could eat in a restaurant every day, I would do it, haha. I eat very healthy though, I sport a lot, so I like powerfood to keep me fit. The only specification for dinner we have on the rider is: NO fastfood. So we always have some kind of pasta or potatoes, meat & vegetables backstage, which is nice.

SoN: Could you tell me a little bit about how did the band start, how were your beginnings, what you wanted to do, how far did you want to go or planned to go and if the approach has always been the same.

When we aimed for an album, we wanted to finish it first, and only after that, present it to the world. It think that worked out greatly for us. No EP, no single, just the FULL album, like a professional product. Surprise the world with that. We still have that mentality: We never really obeyed deadlines: We only want to release the album when WE think it’s 100% finished. As an artist, I think that is the only priviledge you should guard with your life.

SoN: And since I have the opportunity to delve a little more into the different facets of the band, I would like to know how what has been your approach while composing, what is your method?

Our method is basically: every one in the band is the producer, everyone writes stuff, or has the right to approve or disapprove songs or parts. I think because of the wide collaboration, we made music as diverse as it got. It’s not easy, but it’s also a strong side of Textures. You have to be able to discuss for long, and not get into fights; all decisions have to be weighed, and everyone’s opinion is just as important. If it really doesn’t work; then we just voted, and everyone has peace with it.

SoN: I’m delighted to have been able to do this interview and learn a little more about you. We are looking forward to seeing you in Barcelona and Madrid. I leave this space for you to say whatever you want.

Gracias! We will see you there, we want to spend as much time with the fans as possible, so come hang with us after the show, have a beer and let’s finish this in a proper way!
