¿Los has escuchado?

English

SofN: Hi Morgan, first of all, thank you very much for spending some time answering these questions for us. How are you going these days and how is the swedish winter treating you?

Well, hello and thank you for wanting to speak with me. The winter is like it has always usually been here: one day is -12 and the next one is +5, so you never know what’s gonna come out next. Today it’s quite a nice day, mostly sunny and about 0 degress, so it’s not too cold. But you know, nothing new. This is what we are used to in here.

SofN: It has been already more than half a year since you released Viktoria, your last album. With the perspective of this time, how satisfied are you with the overall result and the response of the fans?

I am very happy actually, both with how the album turned up and with the response of the fans, which has been great. We have a very loyal support, very enthusiastic. They are always very open to what we do. And this is what is important: the opinion of the media doesn’t matter so much. The fans like it and we like it. We already did a spring run of one month last year and we played a lot of big summer festivals, getting a very good response on the new songs. Now we are ready to leave again on tour and we are sure that those songs will stand proud on our shows.

SofN: Your previous album, Frontschwein, was your most successful for both fans and press in quite a while. How did you approach Viktoria after that success?

We never think on those terms, and we do what we believe in every time. If something has been successful in the past we don’t want to repeat it, we rather want to be true to ourselves and what we do every single time. We don’t care about what happened in the past or what is expected for us to do. We were very happy with Frontschwein and we are also very happy with Viktoria. Each album represents who we are in each precise moment in time, and we don’t want to look back to what happened before that.

SofN: The name, «Viktoria», and the cover art, are very different from anything you have done before. What did you want to express with that and what type of «Viktoria» are you referring to?

Yes, definitely I think it is different both musically and visually. I think we wanted to do something more conservative, more simple, more traditional in many ways. And we also wanted to have this theme, closer to propaganda. The thing about «Viktoria» is that can be interpreted in many different ways, in the same way that our lyrics can be interpreted in many different ways. And this is good: everyone can get from it what they need to get, how they see in in their own eyes. In my case, «Viktoria» represents my own victory against all the obstacles and the problems that kept arising in front of myself and the band over all the years. I fought them all and I am still here, still doing what I believe in and what I like to do.

SofN: When one thinks of Marduk, thinks of a fierce, evil, and even scary band, actually more than most other black metal bands these days. You are truly believeable, but how much of this image is real and how much of it is a persona or a character? How is somebody like Morgan Hakansson in the day to day life?

Well, I think I am a nice guy, at least depending on who you ask. (laughs) I am very straightforward and I just want to do what I believe in. I don’t have any interest in telling anybody what do they have to say, think or do. I think we are pretty genuine as a band and we have always been loyal to what we believe, no matter how many problems this has led us into and how many obstacles we had to overcome. Every moment has its details and require a different atittude, so I can be who I have to be in each of them.

SofN: What did motivate you in the first place to create a band that is so vicious and angry, and what keeps motivating you to continue this exact same path album after album?

Back in 1990, with all the death metal that was spreading everywhere, there was no real darkness left in it, so we wanted to bring some darkness into the extreme music that we were seeing around us. This is what drove us then and still is what drive us today. Darkness is the driving force of our music.

SofN: Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the band, and I guess during this time you had to take many important decisions, specially since you are the only original member and basically it is “your” band…

Well, in a way it is my band, but is also the band of all the other members of the current line up. We are all equal in terms of decision power and we all share the same devotion for the band. You know, the first 28 or 29 years have passed really fast, and I have never thought really about it. Is not until now that I think that we might have been there for 30 years. But I have never felt so comfortable as I do now. We have always done what we wanted to do and we keep doing it after 30 years. I am proud of myself and I am proud of us overcoming all the problems we ever had.

SofN: Those early nineties in Scandinavia were such a fascinating time with all the black metal movement, specially in Norway but also in Sweden of course. How was it to be part of it then? Did you really feel that you were all creating something special that would have such massive influence in the future and that would become so iconic in so many ways?

Yes we did, we knew we were doing something different and we knew everybody that was involved in it was believing in it. It was something really special, definitely, since it was done with lots of passion and heart and we used to know everybody. Since then many of those people have lost their true spirit.

SofN: These days black metal is one of the richest genres in metal music, with so much inventiveness and lots of bands exploring its paths breaking a bit with the «spiritual» beliefs that were tied to it years ago. What do you think of the state of black metal now and what do you think of newer bands like Deafheaven, Wolves in the Throne Room or Der Weg Einer Freiheit? Do you follow the current scene?

Yes, you are right, nowadays much of black metal has been stripped of their soul. I try to follow it a little bit but I have to tell you that I haven’t listened to the bands you say. I think there is a lot of good stuff and a lot of bad stuff out there, but it’s not for me to judge. I live music with such devotion and I don’t enjoy 98% of the bands because they seem soulless to me. But it doesn’t matter, really, everybody can do what they want and my point of view is not important at all. I am quite close minded anyway (laughs)

SofN: Since the early days with the infamous Fuck Me Jesus, Marduk has been eternally surrounded by controversy. How has the band and its views of the world have changed over the years? Do you think this controversy has somehow fueled your success as a band?

Well, I don’t think it has fueled anything, definitely. We have always done what we believed independently of what people or media have said about it. Media has the power to make people believe what they want, and this is very dangerous and scary. I always talked about what I wanted and about what fascinates me, and media have never liked that. I believe in my vision and I don’t care what anybody else has to say, specially media that the only thing they want is to create turmoil. We have overcome many problems because of it and we will keep overcoming them.

SofN: You have been accused of simpathizing with far right positions all throughout your career. These days there is a blooming of far right parties all over Europe with fierce stances against immigration….

There is a blooming of all sorts of parties that go in all sorts of directions. Myself, I don’t have a political view, I am more interested in the historical perspective of it. People don’t know their own history and they keep repeating and repearing the same mistakes. Today is easier than ever to get knowledge but people keep becoming more and more stupid, living in unreal worlds and focusing their life on the internet. I hate it actually, it drives me mad. People should get a real life and learn about it. Learn what has brang us here and develop an opinion. I don’t want to tell anybody how ot believe or think, this is up to them, but everybody should do a bit more of an effort to know and understand the world they live in.

SofN: I guess you know this german band called Heaven Shall Burn, who took its name from your third album even though their brand of metal is not at all similar to yours. Now they are actually quite big, objectively more popular than you even are. What do you think about them? Do you know them personally?

Yes, I know about this fact, but I don’t know them personally and I actually haven’t heard much of their music, so I am not really the right person to ask. But everybody takes inspiration from everybody else. We took a lot of titles from Bathory, for example.

SofN: Oh wow, but I guess there are not many bands named after you…

I guess not, no. I don’t know of any other.

SofN: But you are right of course, our magazine is named after a song from Dark Tranquillity, for example…

Yes, exactly, this is what I mean.

SfN: In a few months you will be back in the road and and you will also come to Spain. What can we expect from those shows and what other plans do you have for the rest of the year?

I am delighted to be back, of course, it has been a while since we played there for that last time. Spanish fans are always loyal and passionate. We have done already two big tours of Europe that covered most of the continent last year and now we will do a third one that will take us to the eastern and central areas. I always like to go back to Spain and this time is going to be great too. I am looking forward to step again in your soil.

SofN: Well, you speak very fast, so that’s all, I went through all my questions. I would like to thank you again for your time and wish you the best in your next tour.

That’s what they say, that I am fast talker. (laughs)

SofN: Yes, you are very efficient (luaghs) And at the end you were not as fierce as one can think. (laughs)

I can be what the situation demands of me. I think this is the key for life.

SofN: See you in Barcelona then. Bye!

See you then. Bye bye.
