En “The Monolith” veís un “grey world” y en “Eulogy for the Lost” citáis “in this desolate cold world”.

Emilio: Definitivamente no, ¡jaja!

Todavía no hemos podido posponerlo.

¿Qué podemos esperar de vuestro show aquí?

English

Hi guys, thank you very much for your time and just tell you that it is an pleasure to be able to exchange some words with you! Before we start, are you all okay? How is the Covid-19 theme in your lands?

Mike L.: Thanks for taking the time to interview us! Over here in Sweden, where I’m currently based, they’ve been pretty relaxed on the approach to quarantine. We’ll see how that goes for the country, but ultimately the band is all safe and healthy which is the main thing.

Emilio: Hello and thank you for the interview! We’re all doing fine so far. Staying isolated and safe.

First of all I want to congratulate you on “Premonitions”, a fabulous album. As a band, how would you define this new album?

Mike L.: Thank you! That means a lot to hear. I would define the new album as atmospheric metal, and an album built out of a great deal of personal struggle in our lives while making it. It’s a cathartic record for us, in a lot of ways.

Emilio: Pure, dark and very real.

Now that it’s ready to be published, are you proud of the end result?

Mike L.: I personally couldn’t be happier or more proud of what we’ve accomplished, especially give how much we all struggled to get through this last year on a personal level. The band and this album were always a shining light to get us through.

Emilio: Very much so! It’s been quite the road to getting it done but I couldn’t be more proud. The album is exactly how we envisioned it from the getgo. Before we even started writing it, we had clear the intention of evolving into a darker sound and a more raw in terms of emotions. The very tough year we all had personally turned out to be a »happy» coincidence.

Premonitions will come into our lives at a complex time. The unexpected world crisis has cut short all our plans for the present and the future. How do you face it on a personal level and how do you face it as a band?

Emilio: You have to take it one day at a time. You just can’t know how or when it’ll all be solved but we have to do our part as well in helping it pass as quickly as possible. It’s a shame what it has done to the world and more specifically, our industry. But health and safety comes first.

In «The Monolith» you see a «grey world» and in «Eulogy for the Lost» you quote «in this desolate cold world». Is this how you see the world we live in, grey and desolate? What can you tell us about the lyrics and the stories behind the music?

Emilio: The world we live in can be both heaven and hell, metaphorically speaking. It just really depends on how you choose to live life. And as for things that tear you down and you didn’t have control over it, you can choose how it goes depending on how you confront those feelings. Everything is in our power to either succumb to despair or to fight and rise above it and move on from whatever it may be. The lyrics for this album were written at a very difficult time in my life. Many times, I felt as if I was drowning and no one around that could save me. Eventually, I decided to get the fuck off my ass and create my own happiness. It can be hard to make it happen but it depends on how strong you are. Basically, the lyrics are the metaphorical roller coaster that I was on at that time. But in the end, I took back the control.

The cover image seems incredible to me. Well, the previous two also had some great images. What can you tell me about the artwork? Who designed it?

Mike L.: I generally oversee the covers and artworks, with the rest of the band agreeing of course. I had the image of the two figures in front of an owl statue, constellations etched in the base, and the blue and yellow. I talked through this with Bast, our artist for this cover and our previous album, and he came back with this beautiful design that you see on the album! No more castles for us, two of those were enough.

This is your debut with the Napalm Records label after ending the Italians Avantgarde Music. How did this change come about and what differences are there between the Italian and Austrian labels at the band level?

Mike L.: Before we changed label, we asked Napalm if we maintained complete creative control musically and visually, which they assured us that we do. That’s the most important thing for me, to be able to make the music and visuals without anybody interfering or trying to change that. Both Avantgarde and Napalm have been fantastic about letting us maintain full control over the band vision.

Emilio: We will always have love and respect for Rob and Avantgarde Music. They did so much for us and we’re eternally grateful. That said, signing to Napalm felt like the next logical step for us. So far we are extremely happy with the relationship we have with them and we can’t complain at all. Our music is reaching corners that weren’t really there before for us to access. With the huge amount of music being released nowadays it can be hard to get out there and Napalm is working hard to get us out there.

The third album is usually a turning point in a band’s career. It is at this point that the cards are dealt on the table. How do you face this important moment? Are you convinced that the path taken is the ideal one?

Mike L.: There’s no doubt in my mind that we played our cards correctly on this album. Premonitions is the evolution of Sojourner as it was always going to be, a natural progression of our sound in the direction we laid out on Empires of Ash. We’ve grown as people, as musicians, and as a band but we’ve always been very confident in who we are as a band.

In just five years you have been on two labels and have released three albums. Did you imagine such a career start? How do you experience it behind the scenes?

Mike L.: We never knew what we were getting into with Empires of Ash, not to the scale it has become over the last few years, it all just sort of happened…but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Sojourner is a day-to-day focus now, but we wouldn’t change a thing!

Emilio: Definitely not haha! When Mike and I started the band we had only planned to write music we loved and release it. But early on we decided to reach out to Avantgarde and see if maybe they would like to release and distribute our music physically and this was without even a single demo! Rob was amazing and kept in touch with us until our album was ready and immediately signed us. Ever since Empires of Ash was released, we just kept growing and became much bigger than we intended. Now we’re a touring band signed to one of the largest labels in metal and this has always been the dream for me, personally. To get to live it is nothing short of amazing.

On the contrary, you have not done many concerts. We understand that it is complex and expensive for a New Zealand band to get to America or Europe. What impediments do you face living in the antipodes?

Mike L.: In the early days when we formed both myself and Chloe were still in New Zealand, and Emilio was and still is in Sweden. Since then both Chloe and I have moved to Europe and the UK, so the majority of the band aside from our recording bassist Mike Wilson live in the Northern hemisphere now. It’s still expensive to all fly in from different countries, but we couldn’t have done this if we were still in New Zealand! Not the live shows, at least.

The presentation tour of the new album has been affected by the damn Covid-19. I imagine you have had a difficult few weeks in the office. Have you been able to postpone the tour or is everything still pending the evolution of the pandemic?

Emilio: It really does suck! We were crushed but we know it’s for a good reason. We haven’t been able to postpone it just yet. We’re working with our agency to see if it’s possible but everything is in the air still.

This week we have seen your name at the Iberian Warriors Metal Fest in Zaragoza, Spain. If everything goes well it will be your first time in Spain. Have you been offered other dates or can we only see you at this festival? What can we expect from your show here?

Mike L.: At this stage it’s only the festival! But even if this is all we do this time, we’ll be back!

Life encourages us to dream, to meet goals that we have in mind. What realistic dreams does Sojourner have that you want to fulfill?

Mike L.: So much of what we’ve achieve already has been a dream of ours since we were teenagers, even on the small scale we’re still on. We just want to continue making the music we love and playing shows to our amazing fans, who always turn up and show us an amazing amount of love and support. I’d love to tour Asia and the US one day personally.

Emilio: On a personal level, we’ve achieved so much already. To have become a touring band that many want to see, be signed to a huge label and have a major release and of course be proud of our music in every sense is the ultimate gift. I have no pipedreams about being able to live off of this. I would love to, of course, but it happens for very few bands. This is not a genre that you get into for money. It’s about passion. My passion never wavers and that’s my dream ; to remain passionate about our music and show that to the world.

Well guys, thanks for all, congratulations for the new album and see you soon (I hope it)!

Cheers
