Entrevista a Johan Girardeau, vocalista y bajista de Celeste: ‘Si nuestra música tuviera que reflejar nuestras personalidades, sonaríamos como una estúpida banda de ska‘

SofN: ¡Hola, Johan! En primer lugar, muchas gracias por dedicar tiempo a responder estas preguntas para Science of Noise. ¿Cómo va la cosa?

Muy bien, gracias. La verdad es que nunca hemos estado en la carretera tanto como este año, por lo que estamos muy contentos de estar tan activos últimamente.

SofN: Ha pasado más de un año desde que vio la luz vuestro último álbum, Infidèle​(​s) (2017). Con la perspectiva del tiempo, ¿cuál es vuestra opinión sobre este trabajo? ¿Cuáles crees que resultaron ser sus puntos fuertes y cuáles sus puntos más débiles? ¿Cómo ha sido recibido por vuestros fans? ¿Qué sentís que habéis logrado con él, tanto artística como comercialmente?

Realmente creo que es uno de nuestros mejores lanzamientos. Todavía lo escucho bastante a menudo y es genial tocar estas canciones en directo. Me gustaría tocarlas más todavía, pero sé que nuestra audiencia todavía quiere escuchar algunas canciones antiguas. El punto fuerte son las melodías, son un poco diferentes de lo que eran en nuestros álbumes anteriores. Todavía no veo ningún punto flojo, pero probablemente lo veré dentro de unos años… jajaja. Realmente no charlamos con nuestros fans, por lo que es difícil saberlo, hasta ahora no hemos tenido comentarios negativos, así que la cosa va bien. Comercialmente, se agotó a las pocas semanas de publicarse, pero aún tenemos algunas copias para vender en los shows, pero no demasiadas. Es por ello que estamos realmente contentos que la cosa haya ido así.

SofN: En los primeros años de vuestra carrera, fuisteis muy prolíficos como músicos, publicando cuatro álbumes en cuatro años, pero últimamente parece que os lo habéis tomado con más calma. ¿Por qué? ¿Debemos esperar dos o tres años más para disfrutar de un nuevo álbum de Celeste?

Escribir canciones se convirtió en un proceso más difícil con el paso de los años. Es bastante simple, nos estamos volviendo muy exigentes, así que al final nos toma mucho tiempo terminar una canción. También nos falta algo de tiempo libre para escribir algunas cosas. Tenemos muchas propuestas para dar conciertos y eso es lo que más nos gusta, así que preferimos salir a la carretera y no pensar en el próximo lanzamiento todavía. Así que sí, probablemente pasarán aproximadamente tres años hasta el siguiente, pero puedo asegurarte que no planeamos detener la banda todavía.

SofN: El black metal está viviendo una era de creatividad floreciente, con el género ramificándose en tantas direcciones diferentes desde su posición original. ¿Os identificáis como una banda de black metal, tanto musical como espiritualmente? ¿Qué pensáis sobre el estado de salud del género hoy en día? ¿Hay alguna banda que os guste especialmente o que os inspire?

No soy el mejor para preguntarle eso, pues no escucho black metal y realmente no sé nada sobre esta cultura. No siento que seamos una banda de black metal, pero si la gente piensa que lo somos, no tengo ningún problema con eso. Va a ser difícil hablarte de una banda, la única que me viene a la mente es Wolves in the Throne Room.

SofN: La escena de black y post black metal se ha desarrollado a su manera gracias a bandas como Alcest, Les Discrets o vosotros, con un estilo distintivo y dramático lleno de personalidad y emoción, oscuro pero romántico y melancólico. Por supuesto, estamos hablando de bandas muy diferentes pero, ¿sientes una especie de conexión entre ellas? ¿Se podría decir que hay una cierta escena y un cierto estilo personal surgiendo en vuestro país? Si es así, ¿cómo lo definiríais y qué creéis que necesita para florecer aún más?

Realmente me gustan Alcest. Tocamos con ellos hace un par de semanas… ¡son realmente geniales! No conozco Les Discrets, solo me suena su nombre. Realmente creo que la escena metal de Francia (no solo black metal) es diferente a cualquier otra. Las pocas bandas que conozco creo que tienen una estética y un sonido muy particulares. Quizá, la culpa de todo la tenga el Romanticismo. No creo que esta diferencia surja a propósito, pues creo que nuestro fondo de corte común nos hace sonar diferentes. Por ejemplo, creo que las bandas francesas son mucho más melódicas que otras bandas de metal.

Por cierto, has descrito a Alcest como una banda de black metal, y no lo entiendo, ya que les he visto en directo y no veo ningún indicio de black metal en su música.

SofN: A lo largo de los años, habéis dejado claro que sois pesimistas, nihilistas, misántropos, animalistas e infieles. ¿Todos esos rasgos definen vuestra personalidad como individuos y la música de Celeste? ¿Qué otras características crees tener que puedan surgir en el futuro?

En realidad no, pues somos personas muy simples y optimistas en la vida real. La música es un arte que no tiene porqué reflejar nuestras personalidades, de lo contrario sonaríamos como una banda estúpida de ska. No sé cuál será el futuro de la banda, pero la entidad Celeste seguirá siendo una entidad oscura.

SofN: Creo que este otoño vendréis a España por primera vez, ¿es cierto? ¿Cómo es que nunca habéis tocado aquí estando tan cerca? ¿Y qué tipo de estrellas se alinearon para que decidierais venir aquí ahora?

De hecho, hemos hecho una gira por España y Portugal hace cuatro años, creo. Pero fue breve, y la promoción podría haber sido más efectiva, supongo. La banda se hizo mucho más grande ahora de lo que lo era antes ofrece para jugar aquí. Tenemos esta buena oferta hecha por gente muy profesional, es por eso que quisimos intentarlo nuevamente, y estamos ansiosos por hacer esto en grandes shows.

SofN: Vuestros directos son bastante particulares, en el sentido de que tocáis en la oscuridad total con solo pequeñas luces rojas apuntándote. ¿Qué queréis lograr con esto? ¿Qué piensan los fotógrafos en vuestros shows acerca de eso? (risas)

Simplemente nos odian jajaja. Pero nuestro espectáculo de luces se volvió un poco menos minimalista con los años. Seguimos manteniendo la misma estética pero con más efectos y ahora es más probable que se haga una buena imagen.

SofN: Si pudieras poner una gira con cualquiera de las cuatro bandas que quisieras, siendo Celeste una de ellas, ¿cuáles serían y por qué?

Pregunta difícil, pero yo diría que Deftones, Alcest y Russian Circles.

SofN: Hello Johan! First of all, thank you very much for dedicating some time to answer these questions for Science of Noise. How are you going these days?

Quite welll thanks, we’ve never been on the road as often as this year, so we’re very glad to be that active lately.

SofN: It has been more than one year since you published your last album, Infidèle​(​s) (2017). With the perspective of time, what’s your view on the record? What do you think turned out to be their strong points and their weakest ones? How has it been received by your fans? What do you feel you have achieved with it, both artistically and commercially?

I really think that it’s one of our best release. I still listen to it quite often and it’s great to play these songs live, I actually would like to play more of them, but I know that our audience still want to listen to a few old songs. The strong point is the melodies, they are a bit different than they were on our previous albums. I don’t see any waeknees yet, but I will probably see it in a few years haha. We don’t really chat with our fans so it’s hard to know, so far we didn’t have any bad comments so we’re good with it. Commercially, it’s been sold out in few weeks over our label, we still have some copies to sell at the shows but not that much sor we’re really glad that it turned this way.

SofN: In the first years of your career you were very prolific as musicians, with four releases in four years, but lately you have taken it more easily. Why was that? Are we to still wait two or three more years for a new album of Celeste?

Writting songs became a tougher process over the years. It’s quite simple, we’re getting way to picky, so in the end it takes a lot of time to finish a song. We’re also lacking some free time to write some stuff. We have many proposal to do shows and that’s the thing we like the most, so we prefer to go on the road and not think about the next release yet. So yeah, it’ll probably take three years or so to release the next one, but I can ensure you that we don’t plan to stop the band yet.

SofN: Black metal is living an era of blooming creativity, with the genre diverging in so many different directions out from its original standing point. Do you identify yourselves as a black metal band, both musically and spiritually? What do you think about the state of the genre nowadays? Are there any bands that you particulary like or your draw inspiration from?

I’m not the good one to ask about that, I don’t listen to black metal and I don’t really know abou this culture. I don’t feel like we’re a balck metal band, but if people think we are I no problem with that. It’s going to be hard to tell you about a band, the only one which comes to my mind is Wolves in the Throne Room.

SofN: The french black and post black metal scene has developed in its own way thanks to bands like Alcest, Les Discrets or yourselves, with a distinctive and dramatic style full of personality and emotion, dark but romantic and melancholic. Of course we are talking about very different bands, but do you feel a sort of connection between them?. Could you say there is a certain scene and a certain personal style arising your country? If so, how would you define it and what do you think it needs to bloom even more?

I really like Alcest, we played with them a couple weeks ago, they are really great ! I don’t really know Les Discrets, mainly just by name. I really think the French metal scene (not only black metal) is diferent than any others. For the few bands I know overhere, I think that they have a particular aesthtic and sound. I would rely it to Romanticism. I don’t think that this difference is made on purpose, I think that our common cutural background just make us sound different. For instance I think that French bands are much more melodious than other metal bands.

By the way, you describe Alcest as a balck metal band. That’s something I actually don’t understand, I’ve seen them live and I don’t see any hint of black metal in their music.

SofN: Over the years you have made clear that you are pessimist, nihilist, misanthrope, animalistic and infidel. Do all those traits define your personality as individuals and the music of Celeste? What other characteristics do you have that might come up in the future?

Actually not, we are very simple and opptimistic people in the real life. Music is an art, it doesn’t have to reflect our personnalities, otherwise we would sound like a stupid ska band. I don’t know what the future will be but the Celeste entity will keep being a dark entity.

SofN: This autumn you will be coming to Spain, I think, for the first time in your career. Is it true? How come you never played here being so close? And what sort of stars did align for you to decide to come down here now?

We’ve actually done a Spain/Portugal tour 4 years ago I guess. But that was a short one, and it could have been promoted more effectively i guess. Also the band got much bigger now that it was back then. We don’t come because nobody offers us to play here. We’ve got this good offer made by veryu propfessional people, that’s why we wanted to give it a try again, and we’re really looking forward to do these to great shows.

SofN: Your live shows are quite particular, in the sense that you play in full darkness with just small red lights pointing at you. What do you want to achieve with this? What do the photographers in your shows think about that? (laughs)

They just hate us haha. But our light show became a bit less minimalitic over the years. We still kept the same aesthetic but with more effects and it became more likely to do a good picture now.

SofN: If you could put up a tour with any four bands you wanted, being Celeste one of them, which ones would they be and why?

Tough question, but I’d say: Deftones, Alcest and Russian Circles.
