Soy Herald (batería/voz) respondiendo a tus preguntas.

Hello, guys. First of all, thank you very much for dedicating some time to answer these questions for Science of Noise. How are you going these days?

Hi, thank you for this interview! This is Herald (drums/vocals) answering your questions. We are doing good, our new album Poisoned Atonement (2018) has brought new opportunities, so we have been spreading our prophecy around the world, from Berlin, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Limerick, our home town Rome, and soon Barcelona, which will be our very first show in 2019.

In case people is not really familiar with you or your music, could you introduce your band to us? Who are you, when were you formed where do you come from, how has the band evolved over time and what type of music do you exactly play…?

Demonomancy was formed in Rome, Italy, back in 2008 by guitarist/vocalist W. W., the last original member left today. Although our music has evolved throughout the years, our vision has never conformed to any subgenre. It’s an ominous message that was dim at first, but now it’s clear and louder than ever.

What have you published so far, and where would you recommend us to start if we wanted to delve deep into your music? Fans of which bands should definitely give you a chance?

I don’t like to the idea of recommending anywhere to start from in particular because we have always preferred to present ourselves as one unit with continuity rather than «pieces“ of it, whether it be this or that demo, EP, full-length, etc. However, I can tell you that our performances in these times are based in great part on our most recent creation Poisoned Atonement.

In January you are gonna play in the fourth edition of the Catalonia Extreme Winter Festival in Barcelona. Are you familiar with the festival and its concept? Have you assisted in the past as a player or a spectator? Will you be on tour those days or you will be coming in specially for the festival?

We are not familiar with the festival itself because we have never been to any of the previous editions. However, since we are coming especially for the festival, it’s going to be a great chance to get a sense of it, both as performers and as spectators.

Have you played in Barcelona in the past? When? What memories do you have from your previous shows in the city?

Demonomancy has never been to Barcelona, so we look forward to make it memorable, both for us and those who will attend the festival.

Even though in the past the line up of the festival was configured mostly from spanish bands, this year we have people from all over the place. Which of the other bands in the bill are you most interested in watching and in which way you think your band’s show might be standing out from the rest?

I haven’t seen Malokarpatan yet so I’m looking forward to them, having followed them them since their earliest releases. As for Demonomancy, the prophetic nature of our act will reach beneath and conquer the masses, as the voices of the three of us will be heard in unison on the CEW stage.

Which sort of underground black metal events similar to Catalonia Extreme Winter exist in your country? How is the extreme metal scene in your area and what other bands would you recommend to us?

Some examples include Black Winter Fest, Magma Pure Underground Fest, Stige Fest and Frantic Fest. More could be mentioned, but I’d rather not make a list of festivals that only last one edition. I would say the extreme metal scene in Italy is fragmented and generally more present in the North of the country, but people come together when the time is right. For example, hordes from different regions came to our last show in Rome, which we promoted ourselves and featured Grave Miasma and other local acts. The high attendance was a testimony of the great commitment of those who care about local promotions. The Italian bands that took part in this show are all good recommendations: Profanal (for fans of old school death metal), Necromorbid (with their hate-filled Black Witchery-like madness), and Serpent Ritual (a fresh act founded by two members of former Naudiz).

What does black metal mean for you personally and as a band, both musically and spiritually, and how do you see the current black metal scene all around the world? Do you feel that the genre is living some sort of resurgence? Are you happy with the paths it is taking?

I think I can speak both personally and on behalf on the band on the fact that this music is a means of expression that reaches a deeper level than conventional communication. To us, spiritual matters are not primary, but we sometimes use words and expressions inspired from the spiritual or religious worlds to convey a different message. This is usually more focused on the mental realm or the spectrum of the human experience, so our songs can almost always be read in two ways.

As for the resurgence you talk about, I do see a growing appreciation for the genre, and I’m glad of it since it provides us more visibility. On the other hand, only a small percentage of what comes out these days catches my attention, because with the genre gaining more traction it’s inevitable that we get overwhelmed by lesser releases, from overly-polished productions to whatever useless «post» stuff. However, it’s clear to me that there are many people who share the same primevil vision of extreme metal, and those people don’t need a resurgence of the genre to keep it going.

What other plans do you have for 2019? What would you like to see when you turn the head back at the end of next year?

W. W. is going to move to Sweden after the CEW Festival, so our plan will mostly be to get used to this new situation and continue our journey from afar to keep the prophecy alive. Looking back a year from now, I want to see us play more abroad, compose some new material, maybe for a small release like a split, and get things moving to tour again, in Europe or the US.

If you could put a tour with any four bands, being yours one of them, which ones would you choose and why?

I would pick Absu, Deströyer 666 and Nifelheim. All of them have outstanding stage presence and have always delivered with their releases. Also on a personal level, as a singing drummer, Absu‘s Proscriptor has been a major influence for me.

Well, that’s all. Thank you very much for your time and see you next month in Barcelona.

Thanks to you for this opportunity to be heard! Be ready to bow down and pray to your poisoned atonement, Catalonia!
