SofN: Hola otra vez sr. DeFeis.

Nunca habría esperado escuchar a David DeFeis cantando Alice in Chains o Mother Love Bone.

Nos llegaron a gustar mucho algunas de aquellas bandas como Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden y Alice in Chains.

SofN: En algunos temas tú has grabado bajo, guitarra, batería, teclados y voces.

Los he mantenido bastante ocupados…

Algunos eran shows anunciados, otros shows privados.

Los temas que grabé fueron “I Will Come for You”, «Kingdom of the Fearless», «Zeus Ascendant», «By the Hammer of the Zeus», «Dust from the Burning» y «Amaranth».

¿Quizá “Emelaith”, “Veni Vidi Vici”, “Great Sword of Flame”, “Gate of Kings” o “The Burning of Rome”?

“Angel of Death”. “Green Dusk Blues”, “I Dress in Black”, “Kingdom of the Fearless”, “Noble Savage”, “The Spirit of Steele”, “A Symphony of Steele”, “To Crown Them with Halos”.

David DeFeis is an old friend, a genius who has always been pushing up Virgin Steele, which is one of the most undervalued bands in the history of classic heavy metal. Whenever they edit disc, I contact him to tell us their experiences and the recording process of his songs. This time we are surprised, in The Seven Devils Moonshine we can find 5 CDs with tons of new stuff. His creativity and work are on fire, so I had to talk a little bit about the curious versions that we can listen to in these albums, from George Gershwin to Alice in Chains.

People may never come to understand their new songs, but it is obvious that David DeFeis is a passionate guy about everything he does, and you can feel his soul in his work. Maybe they are not at their best, but Virgin Steele is a name that deserves all the respect in the heavy metal world … By the gods!

SofN: Hi again Mr. DeFeis, as always, it is a big pleasure to interview one of my heroes. When I read that Virgin Steele was going to issue a five CD pack I thought that you were crazy, but if somebody can do that is just David DeFeis. Are you not afraid to issue 2CD best of and 3 CD of new stuff? In these days the bands are not selling albums…

Hail Jordi! Cheers and thanks so very much for all your kind words and all your Noble questions.

OK I shall begin…well…to respond to your first question no I am not afraid to release such a massive amount of material. My thoughts are that one should always do all that one can while one is able to. The recording process went smoothly, and we were able to capture what we wanted pretty quickly. The mixing and mastering part of things always takes longer and there were some agonizing moments, but in the end it all came together very well so we thought…let’s go for it.

The fact that physical discs are not selling so much these days did not factor into our thought process. We had the material, it was meant to go together as we presented it, and we were determined to release it as is in one go, not break it up. I know in this age of 2019 that we are living in a “sound bite” world and everyone is afraid of this that and the other thing, but…that’s not how we roll. I always thought that the idea and philosophy of Metal was to be bold, adventurous and non-conformist, to not give a shit about what anyone else is doing and to be true to what you believe in, so with this…we have done just that. For us Music is a way of life…not a career. Our approach is very different to what other Groups are doing. This is what we do…this is what we did, and this is where we have arrived at this particular moment. Like all of our releases, The SEVEN DEVILS MOONSHINE box set is an honest statement and it is us.

We can find a lot of covers this time. But it is surprising to hear you singing songs from the grunge era. I never expected David DeFeis singing Mother Love Bone and Alice in Chains. Does are these some of your favorite songs?

I never had an issue with the Grunge era or the Groups that represent it. To me they always sounded like the bands from the ‘70s… so we were never intimidated by them…we liked a lot of those bands like MOTHER LOVE BONE, TEMPLE OF THE DOG, PEARL JAM, SOUND GARDEN and ALICE IN CHAINS. MOTHER LOVE BONE was probably my favorite of those bands and actually Edward and I used to do “Chloe Dancer” quite awhile ago, so yes I tried to bring in those particular covers that we enjoyed, and that I felt we could re-shape, re-write and re-cast in the VIRGIN STEELE mold, and make them our own. That is always my approach with covers, to treat them as if I had written them, and alter them adding new music and/or new or changed lyrics to morph them into the VIRGIN STEELE style.

SofN: On the other hand, we have got a lot of classics like Bad Company, Whitesnake, Hendrix, Traffic… The blues is the base for Virgin Steele?

Yes absolutely! The BLUES has always been our base or at least one of my bases. I always considered myself more of a high- octane Blues singer, than a Metal singer. Even when we get super “classical” and orchestral, that underlying Blues element is always there. It isn’t always so obvious but…it is there.

SofN: Hymns to Victory was your first “best of”, but I missed a lot of songs? Why did you not issued a 2CD “Best of” in 2002?

I wasn’t really interested in doing a straight up “best of”…and HYMNS TO VICTORY while yes I guess you can consider it some kind of “best of”, however I did make sure that we did include alternate versions of many of the songs, and provide new tracks that hadn’t appeared anywhere else before, so for us it was more of an anthology than a “best of”, and we had also released THE BOOK OF BURNING at the very same time, and even though that album had re-recorded/re-written versions of earlier VS material, it still featured an albums worth of music that was new and had never appeared anywhere before. We always try to break new ground and rise to the challenge of doing something new and creative even inside something that some would consider a “best of”…or an anthology. We never follow the standard formula or do what is safe. So no a second disc for HYMNS wasn’t considered at that time because we were also simultaneously doing THE BOOK OF BURNING album.

SofN: Which songs did you want in “Hymns to Victory” but there was no room for them?

We could have gone any number of ways with that album, but I think that the choices we made reflected what was already currently available from the other releases at the time and I didn’t want to do what might seem like simply repeating the exact same versions, so that is why instead of presenting the obvious, we did include things like the new acoustic version of THE SPIRIT OF STEELE or the alternate versions of CROWN OF GLORY, and A SYMPHONY OF STEELE, and the new MISTS OF AVALON for example. Perhaps if I had to pick one track to add to HYMNS TO VICTORY it would probably be PERFECT MANSIONS (Mountains Of The Sun), as that is a song that I am very proud of from both the compositional standpoint, the performance standpoint and the emotional standpoint.

SofN: “The Book of Burning” was a “best of” based in the two first albums of the band. I have read that Jack Starr was involved in the first steps but finally he decided to finish his participation. Do you have a good relationship with him?

No that is not correct. Jack had absolutely nothing to do with the making of THE BOOK OF BURNING album. The idea was to re-record some tracks from the first two albums and then add some newer material to it. We added some tracks that I had written with Edward and some tracks that I had written with Jack, but he was not involved in any of the recordings or performances or the decision making process. At the time when we were making that album we are already long out of touch. I had not been in contact or spoken to him in any way in about 4 or 5 years, and I still have not had any direct contact with him after all this time. He was off my radar and has remained off my radar for ages. I have no quarrel with him, and I certainly wish him no ill will…in fact I wish him only all the best, but I have no relationship with him. As I said we haven’t seen each other in a very long time.

SofN: The next album to be remastered is going to be Visions of Eden. Do you have some plans about this wonderful album?

Thanks so very much for your kind words about that album…I really appreciate it. I think you might have missed some information along the way. We actually did re-issue the VISIONS OF EDEN album in 2017. I re-issued it with 2 discs. The first disc contains a re-mixed version of the album, and the second disc contains re-mastered versions of the original mixes. I think both turned out quite well, but I am especially fond of the re-mixed version. I think it sounds more powerful, more focused and more the way I originally envisioned it.

SofN: As a fan I still wonder and expecting when your DVD will be ready. Are you going to accomplish this dream?

Thanks so much for all your great enthusiasm! Well…I truly hope to do that later this year…and speaking of visuals…in the meantime I am actually just finishing up an 80minute or so audio sampler/visual documentary about the 5 discs contained inside this new SEVEN DEVILS MOONSHINE BOX SET we just released. It is sort of like a visual radio show. On it I speak, narrating my thoughts about the album and discuss the various tracks, and I play excerpts from the various songs, and everything is combined with a visual presentation, with either moving live clips…strange film clips and/or also still photography to explore and explain the emotions inside the songs…it is a very unique piece. I hope to have it uploaded over the next few days actually! Using bare bones materials and primitive technology we have crafted something quite interesting.

SofN: What are you thinking about the next tour? I suppose that this new stuff needs some gigs. Are you planning to play some covers?

I think we will come out and do a bit of everything, from the stripped down orchestral “GOTHIC VOODOO ANTHEMS stuff, to gradually building up to the full on Metal experience.

SofN: Some bands are now playing live an entire album. Has Virgin Steele think about this possibility? Probably does Invictus could be the CD chosen to be played in his entire?

I think it is an interesting idea, and I would never say no we won’t ever do that, but it really isn’t on my radar at this time. I am more into presenting a cross selection of tracks from the entire spectrum of the Group’s releases rather than focusing in on just one album…but who knows it could happen. When INVICTUS first came out we were performing pretty much the entire album in our live show, plus everything else…that is why the concerts kept getting longer and longer!

SofN: In some songs you have recorded bass, guitar, drums, keyboards and voices. It seems that you are a complete musician. Did you were able to play all these instruments in your beginning times?

I have dabbled with various instruments from early on, but my main gig has always been piano/keyboards and vocals. My main interest is in composing…creating, bringing ideas to life, and sometimes I am the only one there in the studio and that “birth” demands to happen…so I will perform whatever needs to be performed….

Reading in the booklet I see that Edward Pursino stills in the band, but you are counting with Dave Ferrara in the solo guitar and Roberto Esposito on the drums. Why did you choose these musicians?

Dave Ferrara is a childhood friend of both Edward and I, and he has a great passion for the guitar, and for all the things that I am doing with VIRGIN STEELE. Sometimes Edward is not always available to me, and whenever that happens it seems like Ferrara always appears! He actually comes around quite a bit and ends up staying over at my place for days at a time and when that happens…I put him to work! He is very honored to be on the album and quite happy with they way it turned out. In fact he has been calling me up daily to rave about it…he really loves it, which is very nice. Robert Esposito is another longtime friend.

SofN: Who is Lynn Mary Delmato, the piano player?

Lynn is another dear friend that I have been performing with in another project since about 2002. She appears on several tracks on the GOTHIC VOODOO ANTHEMS disc because she and I sometimes go out and perform a stripped down set…just keyboards and vocals. I’ll elaborate a bit about that.

Because of the fact that I am a real maniac and I like to work non-stop, and due to their own personal lives, schedules and obligations, all the guys in VIRGIN STEELE are not always available, so because of that I began jamming with my friend Lynn. I really do work all the time and I really work the guys in the Group a lot! For example we just issued this massive Box Set and now we are already currently recording the next two VS albums, and Edward and Josh have been performing on those discs with me…so I have been keeping them quite busy…but anyway….

Backstory! Lynn and I had met while working with another project called CARNIVAL OF SOULS. “CARNIVAL OF SOULS” consisted of myself, Edward Pursino, Josh Block, Lynn and the drummer who played on the EXORCIST “NIGHTMARE THEATRE” album…Geoff Fontaine (also known as Mark Edwards). With CARNIVAL OF SOULS we performed lots of covers…things by LED ZEPPELIN…BLACK SABBATH, THE CULT…lots of BLUES…and also of course tracks by VIRGIN STEELE, and EXORCIST. During some downtime between doing things with VIRGIN STEELE and CARNIVAL OF SOULS while the other gents were all busy elsewhere, Lynn and I began jamming…just piano and vocals…we quickly developed an interesting chemistry and a three hour plus set list of songs we could perform…so we did. We did several gigs on Long Island. Some were publicly announced and some were private performances. I thought well since we have all this material why don’t we document this moment in time. We set up and performing live, did the entire set over a two-day period and picked what we thought captured the best moments of it. I call those sessions “The Not Exactly Acoustic Sessions” as they were not acoustic! We did everything, live and loud, proud and raw, performing though a big PA System. Thus the groundwork for the GOTHIC VOODOO ANTHEMS album began. As if that wasn’t enough…after picking the tracks that she and I had recorded together, I went back in by myself and recorded several more additional songs, which found me playing everything and singing of course. Those tracks I did alone that appear on the GOTHIC VOODOO ANTHEMS album are: I WILL COME FOR YOU, KINGDOM OF THE FEARLESS, ZEUS ASCENDANT, BY THE HAMMER OF ZEUS, DUST FROM THE BURNING and AMARANTH, plus I also did a few more songs but we couldn’t fit everything on the disc, so the other additional tracks I did will have to wait or perhaps appear as bonus material some time later on.

Orchestral seasonings-At first I thought I would leave the tracks just with the piano and vocal and whatever else we had initially captured that I performed, rather like the performances I had done with Edward that appear on the INVICTUS re-issue’s bonus disc “FIRE SPIRITS”…which was just guitar and vocal, but then I thought hmmm…why not go back in and add a bit more orchestration…so I did. This lent another color and a different mood to the entire affair. However a couple of tracks were kept in that fully stripped down state of just piano and vocal to showcase that side of what we do.

SofN: It is possible to talk about your illness? What really happened? we have no information about what happened to you. I suppose and hope you are totally recovered. After the issue of Hymns to Victory and The Book of Burning we had no news from you until 2006 in Visions of Eden.

I am not sure which year you are asking me about. I have had a few ups and downs in my life, some car accidents and such, but I am not sure which year you mean so I am not sure which episode you are referring to. But anyway I have recovered and I am still wailing away and as I mentioned a moment ago, we are already recording what will be the next 2 VIRGIN STEELE full-length “concept” type albums.

SofN: In Science of Noise we have a section where we talk about perfect songs, and I am sure that I am going to write about a Virgin Steele song in this project. I am wondering which song is perfect among your stuff… Do you think you have a perfect song? Probably “Emelaith”, “Veni Vidi Vici”, “Great Sword of Flame”, “Gate of Kings” or “The Burning of Rome”? Which is your favourite one?

Thanks so very much for your thoughts. I am very fond of many of them…they are all my “children” so to speak…I like all your choices, and speaking of the ones you just mentioned I would say EMALAITH. From a songwriting/compositional standpoint it has all the ingredients that make it a successful song, and the performances on the recording are all over the top, heartfelt and wildly passionate. I am as I mentioned before also very fond of PERFECT MANSIONS…and off the top of my head…. Hmmm …ANGEL OF DEATH…let’s see…FERAL from the new album….and GREEN DUSK BLUES…I DRESS IN BLACK…KINGDOM OF THE FEARLESS…NOBLE SAVAGE…THE SPIRIT OF STEELE…A SYMPHONY OF STEELE…TO CROWN THEM WITH HALOS…as I said I love all the songs for various reasons. They all mean something to me and they all are a piece of who I am.

SofN: Thank you for your time David. I hope to meet you one day in Barcelona.

My pleasure Sir! I look forward to meeting you in Glorious Barcelona in the days and months ahead! It will be my pleasure and an honor….
