Mi padre, Gary Moore, AC/DC, Michael Schenker, Black Sabbath.

SofN: Hi, Chris. We are very happy to talk to you and to be able to find out more about you and your band. Absolva is made up by the former members of Fury UK, among them your brother Luke. When he was hired as a bassist by Iced Earth in 2012, the band was finally dissolved and restablished with the current name. Why didn’t you continue with the original name?

Fury UK was a power trio, myself, Martin Mcnee on the drums and Luke Appleton, my brother, on bass. I didn’t feel it was the right path to replace Luke with another bass player, and I decided to start something new & fresh in Absolva.

SofN: Was your brother’s departure difficult to handle? Did you feel “healthy envy” due to his transfer to a big one like Iced Earth, although on the other hand you would have to leave your songwriter aspect aside?

I was very happy for my brother, Iced Earth was and is his favorite band. So he left with my blessing. And I am a very ambitious character, so I do not feel ‘envy’.

SofN: As Fury UK, you had the chance to play at festivals such as Bloodstock, Hellfire Festival or the Hammerfest, among many others. What did that mean to you then, when you were just 20 years old?

At the time we were very excited to be doing those festivals, but we probably did not realise the scale of what we were doing at the time. They were great times. When you do things for the first time it always stays with you.

SofN: What do you think of Absolva’s reception among the critics in general? And the reception of your last edited LP Defiance (2017)?

The reception from the people, fans and critics for Absolva has been out of this world. We have reached more countries & heavy metal enthusiasts than ever before. The latest release Defiance has been some of my finest work.

SofN: All lyrics and songs are written by you, ¿do you have moments of mental collapse? I am sure not everything just flows unified from your mind.

Myself & Luke write all the songs. No moments of mental collapse. Writing songs is just like perfecting any sport or instrument, the more you do it, the better at it you become.

SofN: As a guitarist what was your main influence when you were young, and why?

My dad, Gary Moore, AC/DC, Michael Schenker, Black Sabbath. These were all very important to me. I come from a very soulful and bluesy background. Feeling in playing is everything to me. If it doesn’t feel good, don’t do it.

SofN: You released a solo album called Restless (2015); will you give us something similar any time soon?

I am thinking of doing a heavy blues rock album for my next solo release. Joe Bonamassa/Joe Satriani type thing.

SofN: What is it like, playing next to a notorious musician (renowned in England), like Blaze Bayley?

Very good. We’ve had a very good working relationship over the years. And it keeps getting better.

SofN: Do you have any special dreams, apart from being the best guitarist in the world, winning 10 Grammy or Absolva being the leading band at all the festivals? (laughs)

Those things you have just mentioned sound very nice, but don’t really hold any lasting values to me. To me it’s the fans that enable me to be a full-time musician. So I value the fans, and I wish to maintain the wonderful people who support me.

SofN: What’s your opinion about the current music scene in the United Kingdom?

Like any music scene, some of it is great. You just have to know where to look.

SofN: Your music is clearly influenced by the NWOBHM school, and Iron Maiden is the first group that comes to mind when listening to your themes. Why did you decide to play refreshed old school heavy metal instead of the more contemporary style, considering that you come from metalcore in full swing?

I like singers. Great singers. And vocal harmonies. You can create really special things. And guitar players with melody. And guitar harmonies and solos. I’m influenced by music that was written with no goal, it was done for the purpose & aim of it being great. Iron Maiden and Saxon in my opinion are the godfathers of British Heavy Metal, with consistent quality, and they value their fans. Very important!!!

SofN: And the last question. What do you expect from the tour and what can we expect from the concert that you will give in our country?

My standards are high in whatever I do, so I’ll be coming to deliver to the Spanish fans, one if the best British heavy metal shows they’ve ever seen.

SofN: Well, thank you for your time Chris, let’s hope that both on a personal level and for Absolva, everything goes smoothly and you have a magnificent tour. Long live heavy metal!

Muchas gracias, señor. See you soon at Rock the Coast!
