A día de hoy me gusta «End of your Days».

¡Soilwork, Whispered, Mors Principium Est y The Hypothesis sería muy divertido!

English version:

SoN: Hello Juuso! First of all, thank you very much for dedicating some of your time to answer these questions for Science of Noise. How are you?

Hey! I’m doing great, just waiting for the shows in Spain. Super excited!

SoN: It has been more than a year since the release of Origin, published in May 2016. How do you evaluate the cicle of the album? How has been the reception and what doors have been opening for you thanks to it?

Well it was a long road before we got the album out, but till today it has gained some nice reputation in Spotify etc. and what is the best thing we’ve got many new fans that seems to dig our material.

SoN: Even though I have read in another interview that somebody said that was «more annoying than an alarm clock in the morning», my favourite song of the album is probably still «Eye for an Eye». Can you tell us a bit the story behind this song, both musically and lyrically?

Well, during the years I had time to rearrange that song and I think I remade the synths in this song for like 3 times atleast until it was something I wanted. The song is made during the time I listened to more groovy progressive metal and music like djent and stuff.. Those lyrics tell about hatred towards shitty person that still matters in your life.

SoN: If I understood well, Origin is a bit of a compilation of songs from quite a number of years, and now you are getting ready to record a new album to represent your current state as a band, which will go in a darker, heavier and more melodic path. What does it mean exactly?

Yes. Origin was formed of old and new The Hypothesis song and indeed the new material has more darker overall feeling in it. I mean the melodies and themes are going deeper, and you can even hear desperation from it.

SoN: When are we to expect this new album? Do you have some songs fully prepared already? Are we gonna hear any of them in your spanish tour?

There are some songs ready already. We will play some of our new material in our spanish shows for the first time ever so I’ll suggest to be there, it sounds huge!

SoN: In september it will be the first time that you are coming to play in Spain, isn’t it? How did this opportunity come up and what are you expecting from these shows and from the spanish fans?

It is our first time in Spain and we are super excited as I mentioned before. We love the country since all of us have been travelling or doing shows there before in the past. But yeah, we got in touch with some local promoters and they digged our material and wanted us to play in Spain so that how it went basically.

SoN: You are playing the Iberian Warriors Metal Fest in Zaragoza, along with bands like Wolfheart, Rotting Christ, Hell or Cruachan. This is a fest full of darkness, mistery and obscurity, while I think your music proposal (at least from what I have heard on Origin ) goes more on a light and positive side. Also, even though you are finnish, you don’t really have a viking component in your sound. How do you think your music will fit in the bill?

I think we bring different side to the artist roster, yet we have also darker new material with us. I’m sure we will have great time playing in Zaragoza!

SoN: Talking about Wolfheart, I believe they are good friends of you, isn’t it? In their last show in Barcelona some months ago one of your band mates SoN came up with the band to sing a song with them. It was then actually when I first heard of The Hypothesis. What is your relationship with them?

Yes, they are good friends with us since the time from Before the dawn, Black Sun aeon etc and we do play a bunch of shows with them. Antti, our singer did feature in Wolfheart Barcelona show. He just came to see the show since he lives in Barcelona and I heard it was as amazing show and fun night!

SoN: ¡It definitely was! You will also play in Barcelona and Madrid along with Moonloop, a band that I particularly love and a bit of a local favourites in Catalonia. Even though both of you have death metal at your core, they go for a more progressive road while you are more direct and melodic. What is your opinion about their music? How did the opportunity of joining these shows arise?

I think they sound a lot like Opeth which I love, yet with more brutal singer. The band’s great. I believe we will have great times with them in these shows. The local promoter told us about Moonloop and of course were excited about the news.

SoN: What do we have to expect from The Hypothesis on stage? What would you say to covince somebody who is still doubting about attending your shows in Barcelona, Zaragoza or Madrid?

The Hypothesis is ALL about live energy and magic. You really have to check us out yourself to see what I mean, it just sounds HUGE. There are no bored people in our shows!

SoN: Besides this spanish tour in september, what other medium part plans do you have in terms of touring?

We have some finnish shows during the fall and winter and we will see about the future. But for now we are giving our biggest focus on making massive second album.

SoN: In recent years, Finland has taken the place of Sweden as the mecca for melodic death metal, with great bands like Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum, Wolfheart (and Tuomas multiple past bands), Ghost Brigade, Swallow the Sun, Mors Principium Est and many more… what do you think is going on in Finland to foster such great creativity and love for this particular style?

The melancholy just lives inside us. We live the most of our time in darkness so I guess thats one reason that drives us to make some melancholic or dark metal music.

SoN: Even though all these bands that I mention have their distinct style and sound, they also have some sort of a dark, heavy melancholy that is common in all of them. I don’t really see that component in the music of The Hypothesis, and you maybe sound somehow more swedish than finnish, with bands like Dark Tranquillity, Soilwork or even Scar Symmetry as main references. Do you agree?

Origin indeed represents some different era of making music. But what I love about our band is that we can develop wherever we want, which is for now, going darker. Of course not forgetting other important elements we love. There are gonna be much of groove and heaviness. People do say that we sound much like Scar Symmetry, Soilwork etc.. Great bands, for us it’s a compliment! I guess we sound now more like them!

SoN: If you had to choose a single song from The Hypothesis to introduce the band to someone that knows nothing about it, which one would it be and why?

At the moment I like End of Your Days. It just has some heaviness and technical melodies with slow, heavy groove with a great growling chorus.

SoN: If you could put up a tour with four bands, being The Hypothesis one of them, which bands would you choose and why?

Soilwork, Whispered, Mors Principium Est and The Hypothesis would be a lot of fun!

SoN: Let’s talk a bit about yourself. What do you do besides playing in this band? Do you have other projects? Do you work somewhere else? What are your hobbies?

I do have a dayjob in some office, and doing metal shows are a great way to break the normal day rutine. I love driving motorcycle and composing music. Of course I play a lot of guitar and watch some good movies/series from time to time.

SoN: And that’s it! Thanks again for your time, and if you have anything else to say to your spanish fans now you can do it. As for myself, I will be seeing you two days in a row, both in Barcelona and Zaragoza, and I must say that I haven’t done that with many bands in my life! Good luck until then!

We are really excite for these upcoming spanish shows! Come to say hi and have a beer with us! Let’s party!! Sounds great, thanks a lot for the interview, see you soon!
